EduTech Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Hi all, I would like to pick your brains for the afternoon, not litrally! Our Director of ICT came to me this morning with a question i am finding hard to answer, or provide input on the case maybe. She has asked if i can come up with a new name for The Learning Platform, she said she does not like it being called that as it is boring so wondered if i could come up with something different. She knows of another school who call there's "The Learning Hub" so wants to do the same. So do you have any idea's on what we could call our "Learning Platform" James.
bossman Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 @EduTech: You asked for this What about the "The Learning Hub" hehe!
steveg Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 I wouldn't say its any more exciting than Learning Platform, but we were told to call ours a CLC or connected learning community. Steve

bossman Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 @EduTech: What about "Active Resources for Student Education" a little long but you could abbreviate it and ask all the students to log into it. ;) 2
DAckroyd Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Ours has lots of names given to it but none are repeatable

EduTech Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 (edited) Oh BossMan you do make me laugh! fantastic! Just trying to work out if it would look ok with loads of (*) in the name Keep them coming though guys, hey who knows it might help another school who would like to change the name. Oh and somehow, i dont think any of the above are going to be ok if people work out what the Abbreviate to lol James. Edited June 22, 2009 by EduTech
IrritableTech Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Does it have to be descriptive? Moodle doesn't explain what it does, but is a nice word and has become known as a vle. If I had my choice, I'd call it Bob.
jamesb Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 If I had my choice, I'd call it Bob. I dunno, Bob seems more like a server to me. Maybe Fred, or Murray.
EduTech Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 Not really to be honest, she was going to call it "Jims Thing" Joke obviously, but yeah
DAckroyd Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 I dunno, Bob seems more like a server to me. Maybe Fred, or Murray. Bob's already taken as an OS name

Thats what TAFE calls it libraries over here, and i never really got the point of the name since it's not really a hub just a book sorting service  and a couch provider, our VLE is called MyTAFE, yes... very original (but whats the point of naming a blackboard install that everyone hates).
CyberNerd Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Our course management system (moodle), social networking platform (drupaled), email system (zimbra) are collectively known and the "online learning community" OLC
elloyd69 Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Teaching Oriented Student Service. Haha........I like this!!
NewOrder Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 The reason they are called Learning Platforms goes back to the Becta functional specs and now used by Partnership for schools in BSF. It was to stop the confusion between, vle, mle and so on. I guess you will be moving to your BSF providers LP in the near future, so why bother naming it.

I dont mind it being called Learning Platform, as that is what we use SharePoint for, and TALMOS is obviously our Learning Enviroment. She is just one of those people who have crazy minds I dont have a problem with it being called something different as a whole but i dont have a very good mind for naming things unless it's servers Which is why i asked here, but i kind of knew i would get the above replys they made me and my boss smile but i just dont know how she and the dep head will take it... to be honest they might not even catch on to the fact what they abriviate to James.
