Which software do you use for web building?

My current experience of building web sites has been limited to online stuff like the Microsoft and Orange sitebuilding kit and a fairly old version of MS Front Page (2003?). I'm now looking at using the EduGeek Joomla package for the school - I can see that a lot of the work can be done online but some for testing if no other reason, will no doubt need to be done on a workstation and posted up to the site.

 

Is there any good easy to use Free to Use software available or if not any rercommendation on a package to purchase please?

Incidently you get a 30 day free trial. Useful if you only need to do a couple of one off things using it. I used to find I only needed to use dreamweaver for a couple of hours once every so often, so just downloaded a trial version of it on whichever computer I happened to be using at the time.

WAMP or LAMP for setting up la server for ocal machine testing areas, XAMPP for setting a local server on a USB pen if you're using PHP/SQL etc.

 

Visual Web Developer from Microsoft is free and quite good, http://www.microsoft.com/express/vwd/

I used FrontPage for years, until they stopped it and released Expression Web, now Expression Web 2... Great program really... I've dabbled with Dreamweaver, but never got into it...

 

Also, you may be able to get Expression Web 2 (Actually the complete Expression Studio 2) for free via the Microsoft DreamSpark thing - that's how I've got it, saw a banner on one of these pages a while ago:

I used FrontPage for years, until they stopped it and released Expression Web, now Expression Web 2... Great program really... I've dabbled with Dreamweaver, but never got into it...

I use Dreamweaver 8 for most web dev stuff, but only use the code window But it is useful to have a WYSIWYG to see the page during coding.

I've never really got into WYSISWG editing of templates, but use dreamweaver atm as a colorcoded notepad...

I will also put my vote in for Dreamweaver if you want the complete control over your project, however for quick/dirty/goodlooking/actuallyquiteuseful sites I can heartily recommend "WebSiteX5 Evolution 8", it's wizard based, but for a quick solution it can't be beaten.

I've found the Serif Web Plus very easy to teach. The kids love downloading the software for free, too. They don't seem to mind that it's not the newest edition. They tell me it's great value for money!

Although FrontPage is officially discontinued, SharePoint Designer is extremely similar as it inherited the FrontPage codebase, and unlike Expression, it's free.

 

I also tend to use Visual Web Developer Express as has been previously mentioned.

Have Macromedia Studio 8 (Dreamweaver) here and Serif WebPlus X2 but the students mostly use Dreamweaver.

We use Visual Studio 2008 but as mentioned earlier is Visual Web Developer from Microsoft a slimmed down version of VS but still very powerful. There are also a whole heap of training videos and resources accessible from www.asp.net.

At School I still use FrontPage 2000 at home 2003

 

We Installed Expression and I really should try and use it more but I found things were taking me ten times longer than I can do them in FP - I guess it's a preference thing really.

 

When I worked for an large Financial Company down south back in 2000 I was in charge of the Corporate Intranet and was using FP2000, there were two guys doing the UK Corporate Web Site using Dreamwever - They were having real trouble producing some Forms and spent days trying to get them right - In the end I did them in FP in about 30 minutes so from then on they did all there Forms in FP.

 

Thanks for the Info on Sharepoint Designer - I might take a look at that.
