Servers in the Basement were 42degrees internal temp by 10 this morning so I opened the door and left to move 30 PCs + monitors down 2 floors in this heat. Then I went home and lay under the lawn sprinkler for 3 hours until now!

all we had was a an extractor fan the pumped some kind of hot air in then they decided to install a modern cooling system likes yours simon yes so we have a desk fan and a extractor fan...

Door is still open but I wish any thieves luck. Opens onto an enclosed courtyard now utterly surrounded by new buildings over the last decade and a bit the lowest of which is 2 storeys. However the potential for flooding keeps me awake at night as the courtyard is served by 1 little 3" drain.

Talking about the fact our ICT suite has little ventilation let alone Air Con to a friend who set up his own Air Conditioning business 4 years ago he suggested I look into the school purchasing a Heat Pump Inverter. Apparently this technology saves 70% on energy cost and by all accounts the entire capital outlay could be written off to tax. He pointed me in the direction of http://www.eca.gov.uk and told me to look at Air Sourced Heat Pumps http://www.eca.gov.uk/etl/products.asp> by all accounts the Government scheme running on this is called The Enhanced Capital Allowance.

Yep ... it was put in 4 years ago when there were only 3 servers in there ... now there are 13.

 

Waiting for the the budget in april 2007 for a replacement.

my office has been a nice 38C for most of the day Server room a coolish 20Cish, fluctuating a bit as i have been in and out. IT rooms a nice 19C with the doors closed. Very nice in there. Put a mobile cooler in my office overnight to hope it will cool it down a bit

19 degrees in server room all day, 22 in our office next door (air con comes through tiles roof tiles taken out in both rooms.

 

I know how you feel we had 40degrees up to two years ago, then the old SIms server kept falling over, marvelous how quick we got air con then...................................................!

Damn the temperature - we had a thunderstorm here this evening - no power, no internet for ages - I had to go out for a meeting and now I'm back - we're up at home - but can't see anything at school remotely - oh dear dear dear - think its going to be a busy morning tomorrow.

Yeah ... the powercut across most of Northants was a pain. Had to cancel an 'out of the box' evening for students getting laptops as we had no lights in the room we wanted to use.

 

Power came back on about 6.20 in Corby and I went and started back up a few of the servers ... important ones ... mail, mail filter, one DC, web server ... leaving the rest off to allow for the server room to cool down overnight.

39 degrees, In most of the IT labs in school, server room is fine providing our air-con unit doesnt freeze up again and leak all over the UPS again! this is rediculous, what are the health and safety requirments for ambient tempreture for work?

Ahhhh sweet relief. I've had a portable unit in here for a year or so, horribly noisy and underspecced ( 8,000 BTU ) but it gets the temperature down. Finally got permission to leave it on overnight (normally have to close and lock the windows) and the temperature this morning is a positively comfortable 20.6c/23c by the servers. This compared to 32c when I opened the door on Monday morning....

Sadly, the upper limit isn't a specified number, just "a comfortable temperature". The HSE have a decent FAQ page on it.

Ballpark figures suggested by other professional organisations seem to be around 28-30c maximum, but that doesn't take into account the health of your servers...
