Brpilot99 Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Hi all ... anybody got any ideas on how we could unblock youtube for staff members only? our filtering is via swgfl and we can unilaterlly unblock sites but thats for everybody .... kids included Networks vanilla 2003 locked down with the usual gpo settings Cheers for now
rush_tech Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 (edited) You could implement a internal proxy we use dansguardian and squid here which the kids go though first. blocking all the sites that the teachers use that we don't want the kids on Edited May 15, 2009 by rush_tech 1
Brpilot99 Posted May 15, 2009 Author Posted May 15, 2009 Yes thanks for that .... I used to use internal proxies in the days of ISDN and had forgotten that use can filter by user ... cheers again
tom_newton Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 The ideal scenario, is, of course to run your own filter - but this has a time/money cost. Can SWGFL give you a different proxy address with changed settings, then you can GPO that to staff machines?
Vegas Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 If you're with SWGfL you can setup the 'staff proxy' and allow staff access through a username and password
maark Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 With embc we got them to setup a different filtering group for staff - so when they login to the embc portal they get different filtering levels - don't know whether swgfl can do same. If you force all students through your own proxy you can slow down internet access if you are not careful as machines connect to multiple proxy servers at internet providers, cheers mark

laserblazer Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 Do they need youtube or could they use TeacherTube.com Or import it into our very own edgeektube. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/general-edugeek-news-announcements/34331-edugeeks-own-youtube-style-site.html
CyberNerd Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 another +1 for smoothwall. Put staff in the "staff" group and allow access to that group.
kennysarmy Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 We are also through SWGFL and were offered a smart cache by the LEA - did you not have such an offer?
witch Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I am reluctant to use the staff proxy due to the teachers leaving their computers on and unsupervised so that the children can access YouTube etc. I have suggested keepvid.com so that they can download the clip they want
K.C.Leblanc Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 We are also through SWGFL and were offered a smart cache by the LEA - did you not have such an offer? We got one to, are you in Glocestershire?
ricki Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I am reluctant to use the staff proxy due to the teachers leaving their computers on and unsupervised so that the children can access YouTube etc. HI I agree and have loads of staff leaving pcs logged on and not secure and however much I ask they still do it. Cue Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 I am reluctant to use the staff proxy due to the teachers leaving their computers on and unsupervised so that the children can access YouTube etc. I have suggested keepvid.com so that they can download the clip they want Set group policies so that the staff users have their screen go into standby after so long, then ask for a password on wake. Screensaver works too, in fact I think that's what we do here.
