cookie_monster Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 As you probably know MS will be releasing a netbook edition of 7 with a limit of ‘three’ running applications, I’ve been thinking about my usage in general and decided that the minimum that I could get by with is ‘four’ programs. I might run a Web browser, IM client, Office Product and Email… oh there we go I’m at the limit. MS claim that ‘three’ is about right but I feel they know ‘four’ is about right so they made it 'three' to frustrate users into upgrading. How many of you feel that you could live within the ‘three’ program limit? ( I know that unlimited would be the ideal but that’s not the discussion we’re discussing general netbook use) Keep in mind that the limit is on three ‘individual’ programs so you could have ‘five’ browser windows open without issue. pscott Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 The built in windows apps aren't included in the limit, so internet explorer doesn't count as 1 of the 3 programs I am not sure, but live messenger might also be excluded from the list

On a netbook though I'd be quite happy with just three. Mostly I probably only use one or two (browser and skype, e-mail and so on is going through the browser anyway).
DAckroyd Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 I thought this would be a problem but looking at what I use on my current Win7 laptop (my second machine) I'm not sure it would be a poblem on a netbook (for what they are designed)

markcuk Posted May 7, 2009 Posted May 7, 2009 well from a travelers/backpackers point of few I usually have the following open firefox skype itunes thunderbird live writer live photo gallery so if it will not run these at the same time loads of travelers/backpackers will give this a miss. they are pretty big in the backpackers scene nearly everyone I have met around NZ as one

(I felt It was a bit of a target in South America so didn't bother but NZ, Aus is fine most of the time, i've found other backpackers to be a bit light fingered though) @ rolfea - and Chess Titans can't be used on the internet booooooo

DrPerceptron Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Supposedly, you can configure you applications to run as a service - which people expect will get around the limitation. On a school netbook, I don't see any problem with this at all, I don't think I have ever seen a student with anything but IE, Explorer and 1x Office Application open at a time.

CHR1S Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Why would you need a netbook version anyway other than cost? I replaced Vista on my GFs Mini12 (which ran like a dog on the 1.6 Atom) with Win7 RC and its way faster in a back to back test even with aero themes on.

One thing i'd like to be able to do is turn off the bluetooth, I don't use it very often so it's another thing using the battery. john Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Disable the Bluetooth hardware device? I think there is a samsung tool, left mine on my desk at work as I use it there as well as home so cannot check tonight i'm afraid, but surely if you disable the hardware that will kill it off nicely

cookie_monster Posted June 9, 2009 Author Posted June 9, 2009 @ john, i'll get on Samsung tonight and look for that util, disabling it seems a bit messy @ fafster, I had been running Ubuntu Netbook Remix and I was very impressed but I removed it to try Windows 7 RC and haven't looked back.
