I think in most schools, they're blocked so the kids actually do some work and don't spend their entire time socialising or gaming... the bandwidth argument is simply an added bonus!

We block Youtube for all students, apart from if they are logged into a media PC. It is allowed for all staff on all machines

Thanks for the quick replies...

This is specifically a question regarding music sites NOT youtube which we already ban for students...

They're banned, but not by me, by the LEA

Id argue that the music streaming ones are less of a timewaste than youtube etc

Most annoyingly last.fm is blocked here under social networking :( I suppose it kind of is, but its a really useful resource for listening to new music and finding out about artists

Id unblock that for everyone if I could

I dont block any streaming music sites unless I get a complaint from a member of staff. last.fm is not blocked here but I cant stream any music through it.

We do the same thing for music for the music department. The kids cant get on music when they want for leisure

We block them with Policy Central so the kids can't get to them but staff can. They still keep finding new sites to waste their time on!! A vicious circle and i spend my time updating PCE.

Is there a thread/post anywhere on edugeek where forum members swap sites they have banned...like a central resource of the most common sites that us IT guys should ban?

Yes, we banned music/video site for students, but allow them for staff.

We use both Netsweeper (from EMBC) and Sophos web security (internally) and both have a filter category in them for streaming media (Sophos is based on Google categories, Netsweeper I'm not sure what that is based on), so listing them down isn't one we could do.

I tend to spend quite a while and just filter the audio... I leave the pages up so people can browse the pages - I'm very evil, I do the same on game websites, I tend to try as hard as possible to just filter the actual game :D

If I sees it I blocks it. I don't spend time purposefully looking for these sites on the internet to block them but if I see kids on them I'll block them.

We don't block sites like last.fm or deezer, I use them every so often for some entertainment and don't see the problem for staff or students.

But I guess if people abuse them or there is some kind of incident they would get banned which would be a shame.

EDIT: does anyone know the port or website that last.fm streams its music from?
