They will probably want something a bit better and will most likely end up calling it something like windows Aero

between 16 to 20 gigabytes and thats before installing any software, anti virus, anti spyware or ought else. OS X Leopard only takes about 9 gigabytes

 

Windows 7 has to have sooo many more drivers with it though.

 

Ought else?

 

Media Center?

Paint?

Some games?

 

Ok I know these are basic things, but it's not nothing.

 

I've installed no additional software yet and I've already, from the 64bit RC:

 

load a video from my MicroDS card (of which it loaded from the front media card reader on the PC) taken on my phone

played it in Media Player (which is nice and minimalist) to find some screen that blipped for a split second (hence this excercise)

zoomed that with the built in Magnifier to read the small text

printed it out to show a colleague.

 

Now I don't think my Macbook Pro does that out of the box.

 

Oh, and I think it will be called...Windows 7

Has to be kept as Windows 7 - the beta has been more popular and mainstream than any previous release and loads are referring to it by that name

Plus its just a number, not the name of a bloody ski resort for once

ought else as in anything else and yes hard drives in capacity are getting larger but that does not mean to say I want to use that much more space just for an operating system - windows uses enough space without the paging file increasing etc.

 

OS X includes a lot of the drivers and comes to about 9 gigabytes not between 16 to 20 ? I have not installed windows 7 so not sure about the option to only install the OS without the extra drivers or not but Leopard and Tiger allowed you to install the OS without the additional languages and or drivers.

 

Bit of a jump !! ( between 9 gigs and between 16 - 20 gigs )

 

Im using about 9 for OS X and can still install windows xp ( minimal install ) with a game or two and not use between 16 to 20 gigs

I'm not saying all that space is just drivers, but they add up. And I'm sorry, but Macs do not need a single percentage of the amount that Windows does, that's the bonus of making your own hardware and not letting others make more for your OS.

 

7 also has little things like, the Desktop Themes per location, being in England it installed the UK selection of desktop images, though if I'd been in France or Australia I'd have got different pictures.

 

At the end of the day, I'm really not fussed how much space it takes up, so long as it works better than Vista and I can move on from XP.

Its the codenames that are Ski Slopes :)

Ahhh so Vista is just a view.....not a very god one mind ;)

I like my Vista view thanks mate :p My wallpaper moves lovely on Vista :)

Erm... wasn't it announced early by Microsoft in the Beta process that "Windows 7" is the final name? I've seen the article somewhere, I'll post a link if I can find it!

I am pretty certain that the name will stay as Windows 7, there has been so much marketing already around that name and they said that they were keeping it ages ago.

 

As to the footprint, 16gb is the recommended not what it actually takes in terms of hard drive space. As pointed out there are huge amounts of drivers included and also the install includes all of the features like vista so that you don't need to go digging every time for a CD to install a new chunk. I'm sure that the nLite people will find a way to strip out the drivers from it but it actually takes away from its abilities as an OS that can easily adapt to different hardware. If you want your existing install on a different pc is is easy, just sysprep it and image it to the new box. Chances are excellent it will boot fine and find most of the hardware automaticly. As long as it has a network connection most other drivers are simply picked up off Windows update. This goes for Vista as well.

 

It may take up a bit more room but from an ease of use and recovery prospective it is a small price to pay. Anyway with systems on the network what does it matter, all of the documents and profiles are stored on the servers and you only need the base software. You can get away with a 40GB hardrive which has been standard for 5-6 years.

Yep looking around it does look like Windows 7 is the final name, I just remember reading ages ago that they were ditching the numbers game with the clients OS, they must of changed their thinking again. I was kind of expecting a late rebrand / marketing drive but it's getting a bit late for that now.

HOW DARE YOU :D hehe, as i'm not a tight wadd (read I was a Vista Beta Tester (ducks and covers from the large barrage of complaints for poor features that will now be hurled at me for admitting this role as I was one for 3 years) I got a copy of Retail Vista Ultimate Edition for my time to the project so I have dreamscene :)
