Does anyone know any decent but cheap email filtering software for exchange 2003??

Sounds like a good plan. better still, rip out the exchange, its not really suitable for schools.

We use the free versions of http://www.gfi.com/mailsecurity/ and http://www.gfi.com/mes/

 

These are GFI Mailsecurity and Mail Essentials. And we use the Exchange IMF for filtering. Been ok so far here.

Mind you, for what Linux costs, you do get Oo.org as standard.

I use the exchagne IMF - Intelligent Message Filter free from MSFT Downloads. Also have Sophos Puremessage Anti-V & Anti-S on it and that helps as well.

I wondered the same if a school is a complete microsoft shop then the skills/time to learn/use *nix solutions is probably greater than the cost of implementing exchange anyway.

Geoff, what version of linux would you recommend to a complete newbie for installing spamassasin on?

 

I tried following some instructions for installing gentoo but i got an error saying kernel panic.

 

I was hoping there was a fool proof way of installing linux somewhere out there.

I'd recommend you start with a VM image of Centos or Ubuntu server to practice on

What about just grabbing an off-the-shelf "virtual appliance" for this e.g.

More or less.

 

Since you're new to this.. most recent machines have more than enough of CPU power, but you generally need quite a bit of spare RAM to accomodate VMs... I get by with less, but 1GB would be more comfortable.

 

I'd start by downloading and using the VMware Player to run and play with virtual appliances.. and if you find one you want to use then upgrade to VMWare server to run it for real.

 

Again I don't know if the virtual appliance I linked is any good, but if not there are probably some others that do similar jobs.

.... I'd also add that disk performance can be a bit of a show stopper for vmware - put the virtual image on a separate ide/ata channel if you can.

I recently had a quick play with Proxmox (http://www.proxmox.com/) which seems quite good and is free. Just stick it in fromt of your Exchange server as a mail gateway.... full instructions are supplied.

Hi Ric_ are you still using proxmox i'm thinking of installing something her in front of exchange server is it easy to set up and are there any problems?
