I've been a little concerned about the convention I use (entry year, first initial, surname - e.g. 05ABertie) since it gives away the surname and you can theoretically guess the age. At least the sex can't really be seen.

 

I suppose that you need some kind of indicator for the year group - therefore someone can have a go at guessing the age.

 

Truncating the surname would get around the problem with revealing the name but then you end up with problems cos kids cannot count x number of letters into their surname.

Hi Guys,

 

We use the pupils 4 Digit Exam Number which they will use in Years 10 + 11 for when they do their exams.

 

This also means that as all the pupils names and details have already been entered into SIMS by the office staff, I can just create a report that has the infomation I require (First Name, Surname, Exam Number (for Username) ettc), then put it into a spreadsheet that I use to create all the user accounts in AD whole process then only takes about 5mins to setup a whole new Year Intake! AND they remember their exam number when they come to sit exams AND they are already all unique!

Dont go with DOBs what ever you do. I generated user passwords using DOBs the other year for the new intake and loads of them didnt work...... The reason being if X person doesnt return x form by x time then the DOBs get made up!!!!!!! These get corrected later but not at first entry

I use year of joining first 3 letters of 1st name then 1st 3 of sir name EG 06JOEBLO (for 2006 intake of Joe Bloggs) or just all initials and surname EG JEBloggs for Joe Edward Bloggs or in primart schools (small ones at that) its first names with 1 or 2 letters of surname EG Joe or JoeB

It seems that the year of entery is catching most people out according to Kevin's rules.

 

Even using the exam numbers is not completely safe as any series will vary with the year groups as they are enter the school.

I use their sims admission numbers, ours is a letter then 5 digits. This also means they are unique.

We generate ours from lea email system so got same login and this is ion format forename+inital of firstname+number

 

But this is all here and there as national single sign comes online as we will use that login and password.

At our place we use the first three characters from their surname followed by their student numer (as given by our exam officer in school!) for example for me (Robert Mabbutt) my logon would go something like mab6152 (actually that was my logon when i was a student!) the first number relates to the year of entry and in AD our organisational units are like this y2006 etc.

Plus we get provided with a CSV file already contianing all the details Ranger needs to create new users on batch!
