torledo Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 otherwise everyone would go down the NAS route or offer a dual connectivity (NAS/SAN) and nothing else. that's what netapp do......they also offer FC on their boxes, but i'm not sure about performance of they're boxes in FC environments compared to performance of pure FC arrays. surely if the S7000 is sold as a unified storage array, i want it to be able to do FC aswell as a dedicated FC array in the same bracket, is there a difference in implementation of FC in unified/multiprotocol arrays which are mostly used/deployed in the first instance as iscsi/nas arrays ? 1
nicholab Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 I would think that FC would get replaced by infiniband or FC over Ethernet. Now a s7000 with infiniband that would be cool. 1

Duke Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Wohoo Just had a lorry drop off 2 pallets from SUN OMG I've got to set all this up now If you're not going to bother removing all the drives before putting it in a rack like you're supposed to, you may want to just release and re-insert all the drives. One of mine didn't pick up when I first booted it and I had to shut it down and re-seat it. No major problem, it just might be an idea before your first boot. Cheers, Chris
teejay Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Wohoo Just had a lorry drop off 2 pallets from SUN OMG I've got to set all this up now Massive thanks to Andy @ Cutter Project and also SUN Microsystems!!! Butuz Also, when you are setting them up, don't attempt nic teaming until you've got them onto the latest firmware version. Also, if you are plugging it into an HP switch you need to make sure that is on the latest firmware version as well.

Now a s7000 with infiniband that would be cool. eventually maybe, but no-ones going to be ditching the copious amounts of FC kit out there anytime soon. Provide the option of FC, infinband, AoE, FCoE or whatever and let the customer choose which adapters to purchase. As for infiniband, i don't see the point personally unless it's a niche hpc-type application.....anyway FC itself is pretty cool, it's a survivor. 1
nicholab Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Cost, risk, and befit of why you went for sun open storage. Why did you not go for a NAS? 1
WiPPaH Posted June 4, 2009 Posted June 4, 2009 Hi Guys, I am actually looking for some new Servers and VM storage at the moment, who would you advise to contact regarding quotes and the education matching grant? I am thinking of a new VM box to replace a now outdated server, aswell as either a 7110 or 7120 for storage of the VM's and perhaps migrating some of our staff shares. Chris 1

PRicho Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Hi there. Thanks for the posting on here. you might want to watch this space over the next week or two... We have some announcements regarding "new" stuff that is coming out that will cover off the 4TB discussion. Are you going to the Discovery Day by the way?? Cheers, Phil Arghh more waiting! I had chat with Simon Dodson at sun who passed me onto a supplier called Vissensa? Had a chat with a chappy there for over an hour about a Sun Storage solution, he's trying to get some info/pricing on different products around the 7110/7210 When are these Announcements likely to be made as summer is fast approaching! I wont be at the Discovery Day unfortunately. 1
cookie_monster Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Ok so what's the difference? - Double parity RAID 13 disks used for the data and parities, 1.45 TB are usable, 1 disk is reserved for replacement (spare) - Double parity RAID, wide stripes 13 disks used for the data and parities, 1.45 TB are usable, 1 disk is reserved for replacement (spare) 1

cookie_monster Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 (the fog lifts) but why offer the two options does one have any significant benefits over the other? 1
pete Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Static electricity is Serious Business at Sun, it would appear. We're now the proud owners of 14 3M disposable anti-static straps (one inside each accessory ordered). Oh, and a couple of servers bursting with ram and a storage thingy, obligatory photos to ogle attached. Cheers Andy and Phil 1
pete Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 (edited) (the fog lifts) but why offer the two options does one have any significant benefits over the other? According to TFM, wide stripes gives you "Higher capacity with slightly decreased availability and the potential expense of performance" vs normal double parity which gives "High capacity and availability at the potential expense of performance".
