So lets be a bit OT / Random, how are you all splittin your 7110 storage up? You making small chunks of mirrored storage, or one mass array then foldering it up? I am in the latter stages of bean counter fiddling for one so trying to work out the best way, I'd love a way of just turning it all into a giant RAID5 array with say 1 hot swap in spare and then split it bit by bit as i need it but guess life won't be that simple?

I had to go for the Dell R710s and no storage upgrade in the end. I did price up some Nehalems under the non matching grant but they were humorously expensive compared to the equivalent Dells. Going to have to make the old CX last a bit longer now.

can we have a look at the rear. that's the most interesting bit for me.

 

Here you go. The two X4150s on top each have an additional dual-port nic (4+2 for data, one nic for management and the rj45 serial port). The 7110 at the bottom is stock - 4 data ports + 2 management.

Ok so what's the difference?

 

- Double parity RAID

13 disks used for the data and parities, 1.45 TB are usable, 1 disk is reserved for replacement (spare)

with the S7000 range you create a single zpool (read RAID set) based on your requirements of Availability, Capacity and Performance. you have the options in the GUI for various RAID levels and being honest you get the best from selecting RAIDZ DP (equals RAID 6) and that's it. all happens in a few mouse clicks and then you simply offer out shares (CIFS, NFS, iSCSI) to the users.

 

If you talk to the guys on here that have bought the S7000 already then I'm fairly sure that they'll tell you how easy these boxes are to install, configure and use.

Are you sure?? Matching Grant gives you the old BOGOF scenario - and remember that June is the end our financial year so talk to your friendly Sun reseller / account manager to see what can be done....

Nehalems never made it on the list. Well, they did in the US but not here.

Already fed back. Nehalem has just hit the Accel program so the are around 40% discount to edu, however they are still........

And you do not count BOGOF as amazing end of year discounts...........some people are sooooooo hard to please :)

What my 7110 is now on BOGOF :D If that's the case sod the counting beans I've got the order pad in my car where do I sign :D as I will take 8TB of storage for the price of 4 no problems :)

Sorry, another question on these SANs, just been reading on the Sun site, and seen this:

MASS STORAGE

 

* Maximum Raw Capacity

o 288 TB (576 TB with a software release in the near future)

* Disk Drives

o 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA Disks

So does that mean on the 7110 in the future I could junk all the 300gb drives that the 4TB comes with and stick in 1TB Drives and make it huuuuge?

Why did you go for sun open storage?

 

We've just got a Sun 7410 and I'm looking at investing further with Sun in the future. If you've got any specific questions then post them here or drop me a PM and I'll be happy to answer. :)

Anyone know if the OpenSolaris implementation of ntp is picky about 2003 domain controllers as the time source? The 7110 syncs fine with uk.pool.ntp.org, but can't sync with an internal dc (Linux servers can sync time with the dc).

 

It can connect and sees that the dc is offering time, it just doesn't like the flavour.

It will probably depend on if SNTP is supported along side NTP. I'm assuming that the DC is already in sync with a authoritative source. I had similar issues with Cisco routers that only used the full NTP. Something cheap but effective like Tardis 2000 can be used on a windows server box

Funny you ask, I had exactly the same problem! We have two internal Server 2003 NTP servers and I wanted it connected to both of them for redundancy. It was really hit-and-miss to get working, sometimes it would accept them, sometimes it wouldn't, sometimes only one and not the other. I could get to accept one for a minute, then make a change to the NTP name and revert it (to make the 'Apply' button active) and apply it, and it wouldn't accept it even though it was just working!

 

In the end, I found that restarting the NTP service on the Sun box then immediately entering and applying my NTP settings made it more likely to accept the settings. Eventually I got it to take both NTP servers at once without failing and I've left it alone since. It's perfectly in sync right now so appears to be working.

Oh that could be a pain, in the past i've not been able to use external NTP servers through EMBC I wonder if this has changed.

 

I'm in embc (well, Netlinc) and uk.pool.ntp.org does work without any fiddling / change requests. It just happened one day and (when phoning about something else) I asked whether it was intentional or not and the helldesk guy said it was by design.

Yeah, the dc syncs with uk.pool.ntp.org. When I get the 7110 serving nfs mounts to Xen it won't have access to an external time source, so it will have to talk to something internally.

 

It complains that "NTP server not suitable for synchronization" when pointed at the dc and there's no mention of SNTP in the config files on the box, so I suspect you're right.

Grr - just tried it with the second DC and it works fine. Going to poke the other dc to see what's different.

 

edit: just added DC1, DC2 and uk.pool.ntp.org and now it's complaining that dc2 and uk.pool.ntp.org aren't ok.

edit2: It also doesn't like ntp.ubuntu.com and uk.pool.ntp.org together.

 

Is there something wierd going on with time stratums / tiers? i.e DC2 gets time from DC1, which gets it from uk.pool.ntp.org. Yet dc2 works fine

Or am I running into the learning / bedding in period for ntp in which it occasionally behaves wierdly?
