Citrix XenDesktop vs. VMware VDI
linescanner replied to JulianFoster's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
For that App stack, I agree, RDS will be the much cheaper option. If you do want to go VDI, Oracle VDI works out cheaper by about 20% than either Citrix or View. -
New EMC VNXe 3150 or the 3300 are good bits of kit. EMC are quite aggressive with the pricing in to Edu also. Not sure I would bother with Fibre

You need to make sure you have X11 installed. What version of SGD and MAC/Browser are you using?

I would have to agree, which may be a bit rich coming from the guy that sold John his. I feel the support of the product is currently poor. EMC VNXe series kit is a much better option at the moment. Also they have no redundancy built in so all eggs in one basket unless you buy 2, which then needs a very expensive pair of replication licenses

Kev, missed this thread until now. Glad to hear that you are on the mend. Be good to catch up soon.

You say this is for VMWare: 1. How many servers ? 2. What is their current space requirement ? 3. Are you looking at CIFS shares 4. What is your current data requirement if yes to 3 5. What will be the number of connected clients if yes to 3 and many more things to ask Give us a shout if you want to bounce some ideas around.

Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance (S7000) Q3.3.1 Released
linescanner replied to apaton's topic in Hardware
Chaps, as promised an update from Oracle. Service Request Handling 1.Provide root cause where possible for each open Service Request - with workaround, hardware or firmware fix, or interim binary relief to resolve 2.Where not possible to establish true root cause, provide probable or possible cause(s), and data-gathering action plan to confirm upon next occurrence 3.Provide clear escalation procedures when SR response does not meet expectation, or when management awareness is needed I am aware that some of you are experiencing long gaps between updates from the support engineer involved, should this be the case you need to provide an idea to the engineer of what level of response you require ie (once a day even if to say we are still working on it) I have also raised the fact that some of the engineers assume that the end user is happy in a Solaris console and are asking end users to run commands from here etc. I know some of you chaps are *nix friendly but I am also aware that a load are not. This has been passed on to Steve Darkes to address internally. For all you looking at this thread and thinking......eeek....lastest upgrade is looking dodgy/scary read on Q3.3.1 Upgrades 1.Q3.3.1 upgrade process includes new health-checks with aim to reduce failure during upgrade attempt (specific examples : SIM path offline, SSD path offline) 2.Customers concerned regarding Q3.3.1 upgrade process should raise a Service Request, requesting pre-upgrade checks (log file size in particular) 3.I will provide you with a list of the Bug fixes already implemented to improve log file management, to demonstrate improvement has been made 4.Log file issue specifically observed by Settle College is being root caused by the Oracle TSC engineer who restored this customer's system As soon as I have the details on note 3 here I will pass them on as it is something that concerns us also. Make use of note 2 S7110 Performance Constraints Cutter will work with Oracle to provide feedback to Scott Meadows (ZFSSA engineering manager) on issues arising from memory pressure on low-end (S7110) through use of specific features: (ie deduplication), and through lower potential I/O headroom potentially leading to more severe relative performance degradation under high load. Regular Service Review 1. Bi-weekly call agreed, initial run of 4 calls - to bring, discuss and respond to technical issues and concerns brought by Cutter Project customers 2. Email follow-up to be provided with customer-ready response to help explain and where necessary counter, feedback originating from individual customer issues So to that end, if you are one of my customers and you want to have us raise anything about the above, please contact me. Oracle do genuinely seem want to get this resolved as are we. I have lots of these boxes out with customers and they underpin our VDI offering. And if it all goes wrong.........shout at Phil -
I have a customer that has just bought the VNXe 3300 and seems very happy, I also know of a 5300 customer who is also a happy bunny. PM me if you want some more info. I am aware that the Oracle S7000 has had a bit of a bashing recently, but still think that is worth looking at.

Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance (S7000) Q3.3.1 Released
linescanner replied to apaton's topic in Hardware
Guys, we do have customers running the latest firmware quite happily. I had a long chat yesterday with Oracle internal and am hoping to get some more info in a bit which I will post as soon as I have something. I know some of you have had a rough ride with the S7000 recently and that you have found support to be wanting, I have however spoken to the EMEA Unified Storage Manager responsible for support and stuff. He has been very helpful in explaining the process to make sure you are getting the best quality support and what to do if you are not. Below is a draft on the process and how to get the best out of it. 1. When should you escalate a Service Request ? Use the Oracle Global Customer Support Escalation Process when your business critical issue requires a higher level of attention from Oracle Global Customer Support Management. This process should be utilized when you: encounter a critical roadblock or showstopper to implementation or upgrade plans urgently need to communicate important business issues to managers in Oracle Global Customer Support are dissatisfied with the resolution or response to a Service Request 2. How do I request a Service Request Escalation? [...] should you still need to escalate your Service Request, simply telephone Oracle Support to update your Service Request. When you reach a Dispatcher, provide the Service Request number and ask for the Service Request to be escalated. You will be asked for a business justification for the Service Request escalation and for yours and your manager’s contact information. 3. What can you expect after you request a Service Request Escalation? If you have telephoned to request a Service Request escalation, the Service Request Escalation Owner will make every effort to call you back within 30 minutes [...] You can also at the time you call request that the SR is transferred to an engineer in your time zone. If all above fails, and you are one of my customers, call me and I will open the gates of hell on them !!!!!!! -
I would look at the EMC VNXe series kit. Have sold s few and all seem happy with them.

We are great and shouting at said Supplier very loudly at the moment. Hopefully we can get some stuff sorted. I do understand their policy and have to agree with it to stop people taking out support when it suits.....ie after something goes pop. Like taking your car insurance out after a crash, however there are limits to what people will view as fair. We will manage the reminders to our Customers about upcoming support, but the quotes will come direct from Oracle as we have been cut out of the process. Again, ignore at your peril !!!!!! They are very hard nosed about this. To be fair it is not just them....VMware charge a 25% back on support fee, and that is hard to get out of also.

Top tip, do not let your Oracle support lapse.
