Thin Client in South West
linescanner replied to neilault's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Neil, we have a small set up in Bath that you could look at. For something bigger you would need to travel a little further to see a big deployment of ours. They are all based around Oracles Sun Ray technology. PM me if you would like some more details. Andy -
We are getting discounts, but it takes a little while to come through. Drop me a PM if you are interested.

Sun Ray 3 announced from Oracle
linescanner replied to apaton's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Chaps, this is the replacement for the 2FS not the 2. This is why it is expensive compared to the current list price of the Sun Ray 2. The Sun Ray 3 has not been released. It is expected that the price of the 3 will be similar to the cost of a 2. The 3 plus has dual screen and fibre etc. This list price of the old 2FS was 380 so it is cheaper. -
26B may indicate that the Sun Ray are not getting Vendor specific info. How have you turned on Sun Ray options via utadm ?
-
What you will need is Solaris 10, which is a freen download from here Solaris Operating System You will also need the Sun Ray Software and the Windows Connector https://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/CDS-CDS_SMI-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=SunRay4-10-08-SP-LX-G-F@CDS-CDS_SMI You will need to set up a Sun account to download these. All the docs are on the wiki here Home - Sun Ray Software - wikis.sun.com If you need anymore info, just shout. Sun Ray is what we do for a living

Thin Clients - Croydon / Surrey?
linescanner replied to chris_uk's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
We have one in Mitcham that maybe happy to let you have a look also -
Chaps all Edu lists are now gone. Oracle have withdrawn them until they get their feet fully under the table. Does not stop us getting really good pricing, just no lists to pick off.
-
They can paint just about anything. Citrix, VDI (XP, Vista and 7), TS, Linux..... You need to have Sun Ray servers also so they are not stand alone devices.
-
Andrew, does not look under real pressure. I have had some at hurricane force
-
No do not. Edu Essentials is running at the mo and the 7000 is running a big discounts.

Thin Client Netbooks
linescanner replied to cookie_monster's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
The tadpoles are Sun Ray in a notebook/netbook form. They do 8" and 10" versions. They ARE reassuringly expensive, but very good. -
Virtualised Solaris for Sun Ray works fine for small deployments like this. It does however not scale too well unless you run lots of small Solaris instances. If the deployment is into the 100+ range would recommend physical tin for the Sun Ray servers.
-
The server costs depend on the size of the deployment. As Sun Ray is not a Thin Client, the control and power is at the server side. Yes this does add a layer over and above normal Thin(Medium) Clients, but it gives you a whole heap of cool stuff that you can do with Sun Ray and SGD. Sun Ray against Thin Client is not an Apples for Apples comparison.
-
Just thought about this. Have you ever seen them together in the same place ..........???????

Not gonna use mine as a coffee table

I understand from Phil that Open Storage will be at BETT. Not sure what stand. We have one we can bring if the Sun one does not show
-
Agree with Ric. Stick with it unless there is a real pressing reason to move away.
-
This is an Apples and Pears question. Sun Ray is NOT thin client, it is so much more (or less...depending on which way you look). Yes there is the extra layer required in the Solaris/Linux servers that adds initial cost over Thin Clients. But this is where the power of Sun Ray lies, it gives you really fine grained control etc. You can do thin client cheap as chips, but if you want to take it to the next level, which most schools will need to then you have to look at the more complex systems....Citrix, Sun Ray etc.

Thin clients without USB ports
linescanner replied to joker197cinque's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Yep as Andy said Sun Ray can do this happily -
Hell mate. Just got back in to see this. Glad you are ok. This world is full of retards that need removing from the gene pool.
