The Oracle policy is that if you let the warranty and/or support lapse then a re-in-statement fee is required....see above.....however daylight robbery springs to mind

Andy, I am on it. We have a line to the people we need to talk to. No promise they will listen but will give it a try. Bonkers

The number per core really depends on what they are being used for. We normally plan on 10 as a guideline on Oracle VDI and VMware View, Hyper-V slightly lower as it does not handle the resources quite as well at the moment (it is catching up). RAM 768 for XP and 1.5 for Win 7 is a good guide but again................. Disks, again depends on what they are doing, 10 VMs per spindle (7200 SATA) is a base planning number. The faster the spindles the more you can run. You can also complement the spindle count with cache. The Sun S7000 series can use RAM and SSD for cache. If you are using iSCSI as the storage connection, the more RAM the better. Initial capex is high for VDI.........Storage costs are the big killer.......We are working on it

VMView environment
linescanner replied to Geek_of_HeathMount's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Dave_O a bit harsh to say this based on your experience. As per the thread you mention there are schools using VDI successfully and in a cost effective manner. You do make some good points, however it is very hard to generalise, horses for course sir. VDI can work and does. The only way to see if it fits a specific environment is to approach the end game from many different angles, not just technical or financial. You have had a bad run with it, maybe it was not for your environment. I take exception to We are experts in this field and have plenty of happy customers on here that will back that up. Let us face it, after a little time I could fathom how to fit new windows in my house, will it be as good as someone who does it everyday..........doubtful. We are experts as we have done this time after time and day after day and learnt the hard way. There are plenty of companies out there that can add real value. You just have to look. -
Drop me a line if you need pricing. Can push for some extra discount.

As kmount said, it is possible. We have had customers running TS alongside CC3 very happily indeed. It is much easier to run them outside the RM GPO and build some dedicated for the TS. I hate people who tell porkies about capabilities, when the answer they give is to aid their sales etc.........Drives me nuts

Looking at size and budget required, I would suggest the Oracle stuff is overkill and too expensive. @itgeek, rough baseline costing for the 7120 12TB unit is £16000 approx

Yes.....Us

Main reason is it is getting harder and harder to get small drives. Small SAS 2 drives are hard to come by. You Need spindle count.

laser402 You are looking at £16-17k for the 7120

Storage Suggestions for Backup and Vmware Datastores
linescanner replied to fox1977's topic in Hardware
Fox 1977, drop me a pm and we can see what we can do for you. The S7000 range is very good for what you want to do. There are a load of guys on here using various models. Re pricing - Good saying in life, you pay for what you get. -
rob101, there are 3 main VDI solutions and a number of smaller ones. The 3 main are VMware View, Oracle VDI and Citrix XenDesktop. They all have good points and bad points. A lot will depend on budget and what it is you want to do with the system. Drop me a PM if you want a chat sir.

Comapre thin computing suppliers
linescanner replied to johno's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Johno, It is hard to say which are the top 2 suppliers, all the main vendors have good points and bad points. A lot will depend on what it is you want to do with the system. It is hard to go over all this in a web post. You are much better off having a chat with people who know and have extensive experience in the field. The technologies out there are good, but it is all about expectation management. Working out where thins fit and more importantly where they do not. I am more than happy to have a chat with you about stuff (No hard sell) just to give you some pointers and things to think about. Drop me a PM if you would like a chat sir. -

Anyone using virtual desktops
linescanner replied to ezzauk's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
You say such nice things. Oracle VDI is really worth looking at. It is highly capable as a VDI platform. View is also worth looking at. Be aware that which ever option you look at the initial Capex is going to be high to do it properly. You really need to look at the long term 3-5 years on the cost/management savings to see that it a good option. -

Combine this kit with the latest VDI 3.2, SGD 4.60 and Sun Ray 5 software and you have a very flexible Thin Client environment.
