Now that both my servers are 10000 miles away from me, Ive not been inclined to reboot them just in case they dont come back up.. I do updates once a month and stuff, but obviously Ive not updated the kernel in a while.. robert@roberts / $ uptime 04:46:53 up 210 days, 8:38, 3 users, load average: 4.75, 2.05, 1.53 This one is an ancient machine and getting replaced when Im home at xmas so not really worried about that one. In fact, Im pretty sure it wouldnt survive a reboot heh. robert@oasis ~ $ uptime 04:48:16 up 267 days, 12:26, 1 user, load average: 0.21, 0.11, 0.09 This one is running 3 VMs one of which is 2008R2 running Exchange, whihc is kinda important.. Should I be worried about doing kernel upgrades and rebooting more often?

Im running virtual box in headless mode, and the way it works is it starts a RDP server on a specified port for you to RDP to. I want to access these virtual machines remotely, so I have forwarded the relevent ports in the modem/router. However this offers no authentication, and will let anyone get straight to the Login screen. Im a bit worried that Ive forgot to lock the screen a couple of times and others have been able to get into my VMs. Logs from the router/modem show connecitons on the RDP ports. Im not too sure how to tell if they were just scans of if they were able to get right through to the desktop (anything i can check in either the guest windows logs or the host linux logs?) So what I want to do, is some sort of IP based restriction for these RDP ports. Do i just add the ports and the allowed IP(s) to hosts.allow ? Is it as simple as that? Or do I need to implement IP tables? I dont want to lock down the whole box as I will need to ssh/squid/openvpn in from any random IP Cheers

Ive got 2 gentoo servers, .4 and .12. Both are bind dns servers. .12is an openvpn server too. DNS works fine using either server for clients on the local server, but when I connect via VPN, i get an error: robert@rubuntu:/$ nslookup www.edugeek.net ;; Got recursion not available from 192.168.2.12, trying next server Server: 192.168.2.4 Address: 192.168.2.4#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.edugeek.net Address: 83.166.174.50 and in the /var/log/messages i see Jul 6 06:26:19 oasis named[23051]: client 10.8.0.6#37381: query (cache) 'www.edugeek.net/A/IN' denied This has only recently started, they both used to work fine.. Any ideas?

I run virtualbox in headless mode, which allows to RDP to the host server to view/control the Virtualmachines. Since upgrading to Virtualbox 4.0 I am no longer able to connect to the Virtual Machines via RDP. They are definately running, as I can ping them and access their services etc. Once thing different is when I restarted them, I got a warning that the -p port option for what port to listen on for RDP is depreciated, so I started them with the new option it said to: 11333 ? Sl 19:50 /opt/VirtualBox/VBoxHeadless -startvm 2008R2 11586 ? Sl 2:58 /opt/VirtualBox/VBoxHeadless -startvm Win7Pro -e TCP/Ports=3391 16141 ? Sl 42:39 /opt/VirtualBox/VBoxHeadless -e TCP/Ports=3390 --startvm 2008Server However an nmap of localhost doesnt show them open or listening... and I cant connect to them.. Has anyone else had this problem, or am I missing something?

my 2008R2 virtualbox keeps stopping. Cant seem to figure out why, not too sure where to look for logs but theres nothing in the event viewer on R2. Any ideas? So as well as getting to the root of the issue, I was thinking of maybe writing a script to check if its running, and if not, start it. Was thinking of just addling the VboxHeadless -startvm to an hourly cron.. but is there a better way than that?

Im pretty sure.. I setup a joomla on one of my vhosts as a test, and forgot about it.. For well over a year or more.. Happened to look through my apache logs, and found a whole load of random GETs.. I immediately shut down apache, moved apache over to another box, and moved the other websites (all non-joomla) over to it. I setup password protection on the main site, and only allowed the vhosts I panicked, and deleted the folder which had the stuff which I reckon was the hacked stuff, but in the apache logs, the bad stuff was listed as 66.249.66.129 - - [11/Mar/2011:11:25:46 +0000] "GET /components/com_facileforms/startdownload-Lisa-Gerrard-With-Klaus-Schulze-Come-Quietly-CD-2009-JUST.rar.html HTTP/1.1" but each GET was for a different filename. I did a search, and none of those files appear to be on the local system, but I cannot be 100% sure? IVe reset the root password, and killed apache.. I did a search for the /components/com_facileforms/ and that was a path that appeard within the joomla install, albiet it had a newer creation date than the actual joomla install. I had a quick look at the php files in there, and one seemed to be a re-write of google bot IPS, whichi is probably why all the logs in my access_log for apache resolve to googlebot IPs. I shouldnt have deleted the files so hastily, but I panicked. Since moving the sites (same domains and same IPs) over to a new box, I am still getting a load of hits in the logs, although now they are 401 (access denied I hope?) But thiey still seem to be coming from googlebot IPs? 66.249.66.129 - - [11/Mar/2011:11:20:03 +0000] "GET /components/com_facileforms/startdownload-22.Tech.N9ne.-.Like.Yeah.vob.html HTTP/1.1" 401 475 66.249.66.129 - My Windows VMs sit on top of a linux (gentoo) host. If i need to reboot the host, i need to manually shut down all 4 windows VMs first. Its a bit of a hassel. Is there any way to invoke a Windows server shutdown from the command line on the linux host?

Im going to follow this guide to try and get bridged networking going VirtualBox - Gentoo Linux Wiki, but the thing Im worried about is ive already got a TUN device created for openvpn, I dont want to break that.. eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1e:0b:c6:81:c9 inet addr:192.168.2.12 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::21e:bff:fec6:81c9/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:78047253 errors:0 dropped:10 overruns:0 frame:8 TX packets:59585213 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:56586542741 (52.7 GiB) TX bytes:36909333385 (34.3 GiB) Interrupt:19 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:1201243 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:1201243 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:146355649 (139.5 MiB) TX bytes:146355649 (139.5 MiB) tun0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 inet addr:10.8.0.1 P-t-P:10.8.0.2 Mask:255.255.255.255 UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:3740678 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:6109705 errors:0 dropped:48 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:290021203 (276.5 MiB) TX bytes:7594846057 (7.0 GiB) Will any of the stuff in the instructions to bridge to virtualbox break anything? How would I go about installing virtualbox or vmware so I can run a virtual Windows XP / Server2008 on a gentoo server which doesnt run X, and that I have only SSH/FTP access to. Is it possible??

I had to send my 250gb external WD Passport back to WD as a warranty, had the replacement shipped to my folks so they can fill it up with stuff and post it back to me. I had them plug it into my gentoo box, but I cannot see it either in fdisk or lsusb. I had them put it in my other gentoo box and the same, I cant see it. I then had them try it in their laptop and it works fine. USB hard drives have worked in my gentoo boxes before and Ive done nothing to change them.. Any idea why it wouldnt be showing up on 2x different boxes? And is there another command I can try to see if it detects it?

Does anyone know if virtualbox have created a simple way to expand the size of a hard drive yet, and if so, how would I go about doing it in the cli.. The search function at the virtualbox.org forums is not working just now, and google pulls up threads from 2007 where they say they want to implement an easy way but Im not sure if they have yet? cheers

After a fun battle to get truecrypt to install on Gentoo, Ive finally got it running, created my encrypted container etc, all fine. However when trying to mount the encrypted container, I get the following error: Error: device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument Command failed I had to add FUSE to the kernel before TC would install, which I did as a module. Ive not rebooted, but I dont think I need to with just a modular kernel change rather than compiling it within? Any suggestions?
