I've noticed that ASR reregsitering problem the last couple of days. Seems that whenever I reboot the 7110 we've got it's reregistering its self.

Yep, that's pretty much what I've got here. After being rebooted it will temporarily say it’s unable to resolve the proxy and will lose the appliance registration details, requiring me to re-apply them and get a load of ‘ASR Registration’ emails from Sun each time. This also temporarily causes Phone Home and Support Bundles to fail to send if any are pending.

The HDD issue I had was a weird one and involved getting a couple of different drives and hoping for the best. I've given Sun the full details and if necessary I'll look at getting an engineer on site because it all involves the same slot on the J4400 chassis.

I also have an even stranger potential problem. Yesterday I had to shut the 7410 down due to a scheduled power outage. This morning I booted it back up again like normal (power up the J4400 and wait until it's stable, then plug in the 7410 and wait until it has fully initialised before powering on). The fans came on full then slowed down like normal and after a while it started pinging, but the OS System HDDs never lit up and still aren’t on now, even though the BUI is accessible. The serial interface never changed from the low-level login (service processor) to the higher-level login (device hostname) either, but I can’t remember if this is normal for the serial login as I rarely use it. I've rebooted the 7410 but this made no difference and the OS HDD lights aren't on even though the 7410 is fully working...

I had a similar problem with the HDD LEDs on one of our X4150's. For some reason the LEDs wouldn't come on (despite lighting up like they all do during the power on) during normal operation. I hadn't gotten round to submitting a support request for it yet, but I noticed the other day they were working again

No idea what the problem was, or what fixed it!

Guys,

can you submit a support call on this issue. I will get it flagged up via our channel also.

Can you confirm that you are all on the latest firmware

Posted
I have the same issue with a folder that I can't delete.

Grant,

have given Chris an idea of trying to sort this. Not ideal but want to see if it works.

Can you mount the share via NFS to a *nix box and see if you can kill it that way.

Let me know if it works

Andy, sorry I didn't get chance to post back after I realised it probably isn't the same issue. My file issue was inside an NTFS formatted virtual disk that's hosted on the SAN so is probably unrelated to the issue that Chris was having.

Yep, mine's on a CIFS share. I'm not 100% familiar with NFS so I'll have a look at a few things before mounting all my data. :p

I'm definitely on the latest release and I'd submitted the issues to Sun as part of the original SR. If they don't get back to me then I'll submit a new SR for these issues.

Cheers,

Chris

Ah ok. Is this iscsi mounted a block device to a windows box ?

The NFS should be easy. Just add it as a type on the LUN then mount it by hand on the Linux box

It's an iSCSI LUN but controlled and presented to the windows host via Xenserver so Windows just sees it as an attached disk, but yes essentially it's a disk presented via iSCSI.

Other than this one file issue which is now solved (and nothing to do with iSCSI) it all seems to be working very well actually and I can use FSRM :D

Yes this is normal, you need to login to the ILOM (Service processor) and issue the following command to get a high level login.

start /SP/console

what is the difference between internal and ISP proxy ?

Internal is either:

ISA 2006 on a Windows 2003 box with a rule that says allow all traffic from the 7410's IP to all external networks. This will phone home and do support bundles, but after a reboot it temporarily says 'cannot resolve proxy' and I've had issues with it connecting at all in the past. If I monitor traffic on ISA then I do get a failed connection error (followed by successful open/close) each time it connects to the Sun servers, but this may just be because it's over SSL and ISA can't see that the connection is terminating normally.

Bloxx web filtering system, which the 7410 will always reliably connect to and use for phone home, but won't upload support bundles through. My guess would be that the Bloxx system is blocking them for some reason, but there's nothing in the logs about it filtering any traffic from the 7410 and it uses a rule which has pretty much no filtering on it.

External is:

South West Grid for Learning pool of proxies which we have no control over. I think they run Squid but I'm not sure. There's a basic level on web filtering on them but nothing that should block Sun. I use these for all my Linux servers to get updates and bypass the internal systems with no issues.

Yes this is normal, you need to login to the ILOM (Service processor) and issue the following command to get a high level login.

Cheers, I thought that might be the case but I pretty much only ever use the serial connection for monitoring the 7410 booting up or shutting down so I couldn't remember! :)

The NFS should be easy. Just add it as a type on the LUN then mount it by hand on the Linux box

I might actually be removing that whole filesystem soon so it might end up not being an issue. If not then I'll give NFS a go. ;)

Chris

Have fun and watch out for the odd issue early on that's been documented here. After that it's all good...! ;)

Your not wrong, Our 7210 just arrived, its mahoosive!

I'll say one thing I mentioned before - If you don't remove the drives in order to move it and put it in a rack (like you're meant to!) then it may be a good idea just to quickly re-seat all the drives before you first boot it up in case any of them have been a little dislodged during transit. One of mine didn't detect the connection when I first started it and I had to shut it down and re-seat the drive for it to show up, no problems since then though. :)

Good reply. As with all these things stuff does get jostled in transit.

Also, once you have it up and running go to the Sun website and download the latest update for the appliance. I'm not 100% sure what is shipping from factory at moment but suspect that it won't be the absolute latest. Once you've done that, register the appliance and set up your phone home.

Enjoy!

Good advice!

Also we have an accelerator card, we've been advised to install this in Slot 3? seems abit random?

It's not random actually - even though it might seem that way. The first SSD (LogZilla) goes in slot #3 and the second one goes in slot #11. The S7210 expects to see them in those slots if they are installed. Just do you're aware, always install any SSDs before you configure the storage on the box. It's actually best to do it as soon as you get the box then there's nothing to worry about. If you creates your zpool (i.e. configure your storage) then if you add an SSD later you'll have to trash the zpool (sorry about that).

Once you've done that, register the appliance and set up your phone home.

I can't seem to find where I should go to register the appliance or get the phone home to work. I've been putting in my Sun online user account and the IP address of our Smoothwall but it still won't connect it just says "The appliance was unable to connect to the remote support servers (or the web proxy, if specified). Check your proxy and network configuration." I've tried our Smoothwall and the EMBC proxy.

I had this too. It completely fails on our external ISP proxy, I had some issues with ISA on early software releases, and it works fine on our internal filtering system for Phone Home but fails to upload support bundles. I now have it working with ISA and everything seems okay.

Have you updated to the latest firmware? This may resolve some of the proxy connections issues.

EDIT: Have you made sure you're using the FQDN of your proxy server?
