Edu-IT Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Just some missing info on a couple of products. Not one of your best finds Zak. I was hoping for something far more internesting.
NeoPlosive Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Not one of your best finds Zak. I was hoping for something far more internesting. Like a bug which allows you to "buy" but not pay anything?
acer-man Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Like a bug which allows you to "buy" but not pay anything? Don't worry any problems like that get sorted very quickly!!!:)
K.C.Leblanc Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 I realise this site has to be paid for, and I'm perfectly happy for it to contain advertising and sponsorship. However this might go too far, I'd like to know what Edugeek is getting out of this. I also hope that Edugeek have put measures in place to assure Acer won't be able to exercise any influence over items published on Edugeek. This includes measures to prevent Acer withdrawing financial support on short notice.
Quackers Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Acer is determined to offer a service which is second to none I'm still cannot get over that comment...... were never buying Acer's again.
Dos_Box Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 I'm still cannot get over that comment...... were never buying Acer's again. Apparently there has been a change of tack at Acer. They did have appalling service up until just over a year ago. Now they turn routing repairs around within 3-5 working days. They once had a laptop of mine for 3 months to replace a faulty trackpad! I wouldn't have partnered EduGeek up with them if I was not happy that the service was good enough for our members schools.

I'll give them another test i have one here that needs to go back under warrenty, (we have over 150 Acer laptops here) lets see if they can fix it first time. I use to like Acer 3-5 years ago as the support worked, now i'm lucky if it gets fixed after the 3rd send back. October last year it took 4 send backs to get a hard disk replaced. They kept saying it was not broken, yet RIS or WDS or the CD would not rebuild the laptop. If i changed the hard disk my self it built fine, but we paid for a 3 year extended warrenty so were not paying for a new disc, faulty one back in and send off They even had the cheek to say on one send back that the computer needed Windows re-installing and wanted to charge us £50. Then there is the laptop thats been back over 14 times and still is not fixed so we just gave up Also the lack of XP drivers for there laptops that come with Vista pre loaded is poor, and there response of "it did not come with XP so why would we put XP drivers for download" is not a good one On the plus side is there a replacement model for the Aspire 5310? I did like those for kids to use as they seemed to take batterings quite well. Edited February 12, 2009 by Quackers 1
ninjabeaver Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 They are still refusing to replace a faulty HDD here. They want the whole laptop back, which we can't do as it's in use again. The faulty 80GB SATA Toshiba HDD is sitting on my desk edging towards the bin. The customer service through ACER was rubbish and we will not be entertaining any of their products for use in the school. HP can ship a new HDD out within two days from the Netherlands and trust the customer to use the box again to send the faulty one back, why can't Acer?
Dos_Box Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 (edited) Which is why we have someone (Acer-Man) you can contact directly to raise hell on your behalf. One thing I wanted to be sure of was not just having a sales rep running away with you cash and leaving you stranded. Acer-Man will be contactable via the forums, IE the Outlet feedback forum: EduGeek Outlet Feedback And via the phone if you get their number from the site. Edited February 12, 2009 by john Typo

Not going to lie to you all Acer will not ship parts to you, sorry if that is a problem. However they will turn around problems much quicker than they did a year ago. If any one has problems or bad stories to tell please e-mail me them. I will gather all your complaints then pass them to Acer with my opinions! Acer are aware of us and both the the head of the service centre and the manager of repairs are in my contacts list. I will not have schools suffer due to bad service and if needs be I will take the case myself to get this sorted. I am sorry that you have experianced problems but I will not let that happen to any of my customers. If you buy PCs or Laptops off us and are not happy with them I will buy them back, that is how certian I am that Acer can supply what you need. (Boring bit: This is subject all the normal T&Cs etc.. please contact me for details) I am Acer Man, let me be your answer to problem free IT! Richard

Thanks
stratisphere Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Hmm, quite a good idea. Although two "problems" come to mind... 1) What about us who dont use/like Acer kit? (Delete as needed) 2) I'm sure there are some other schools like us who cant use the ordering online feature. I assume if we ever need to order anything via this system, it can be via the normal quote + fax + invoice method?
stratisphere Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Oh, and any chance another forum will pop up *just* for technical advice for educational techies?
PeterW Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 1) What about us who dont use/like Acer kit? (Delete as needed) You can always support edugeek by asking the other forums sponsors for quotations & support 1
Haptic Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 You can always support edugeek by asking the other forums sponsors for quotations & support here here to that lol 1
sparkeh Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Must admit I am a little surprised at this move, the site seemingly endorsing one brand and one sponsor over the others. Personally I won't use Acer again and would rather contact a company like CPLTD to get the best deal across the whole range of brands available. I understand that the site would do everything it can to get the best deal for its members, and in reality its nothing to do with me, just surprised is all. 1
acer-man Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Thanks for your posts, in answer to questions: Yes we can (and already have) provide quotes. We require a PO to accept any orders. Yes we will (and already have) provide invoices. Yes we only stock Acer on EduGeek Outlet. If we provided every model from every vendor I would not feel confident that my staff and I would understand all the models. Also by limiting to one brand we ensure the backup of Acer giving you peace of mind. All of the sponsers on EduGeek have the schools needs at the forefront of their decisions. I would expect Acer Outlet to provide the best level of Acer support, but for other vendors I would suggest you ask either SCL or CPLTD both very knowledgable in their fields. Hope that helps. 3
stratisphere Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 ooo, well dodged! It's ok, i just wanted to ask out in the open. We have a to preference... im sure most schools have a preference to one type of brand. I just dont think i'd like edugeek to become specialised in one certain brand. (Not that I have a choice mind you! )
Popular Post Dos_Box Posted February 13, 2009 Author Popular Post Posted February 13, 2009 Must admit I am a little surprised at this move, the site seemingly endorsing one brand and one sponsor over the others. Personally I won't use Acer again and would rather contact a company like CPLTD to get the best deal across the whole range of brands available. I understand that the site would do everything it can to get the best deal for its members, and in reality its nothing to do with me, just surprised is all. That is why we went with just one brand, and one that does not step on the toes of our current sponsors. You want free conferences? Well I'm afraid it costs, and currently we need to explore several avenues we had previously not seen the need in. The conf in May will costs us about 5-6k all in and currently the bank is bare. Besides, this may lead to something that is beneficial to all of our reseller sponsors once we have banged our heads together a few more times. There are 70,392,567 websites in the world according to wikianswers.com, currently we sit at number 100,081 (according to alexa.com) and will advance a bit higher (ZH estimates into about the 75,000s) at the next revision. This costs us (by us I mean me) a LOT of money. If you knew our actual running costs and yearly expenditure it would take a few of you to club together your annual wages and donate them to the cause. Any volunteers? or would you like to to worry about all of this side of things? We do have to walk a fine line, but one thing I will not do is sell you all out. We get many offers for access to our user database, often for quite large sums of money, or offers to flood the forums with ads, or paid membership schemes, but never one have we even looked at doing any of this. So to keep going we have to look at things in ways that may look strange to you, but are often implemented after long, late night MSN discussions between all of the admins and mods to ensure we don't dump on our members. We have not taken any choice away from you by partnering up with Acer Outlet, just exploring an option for ensuring we can still support you in the future. 7
vikpaw Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Here here DB. @Sparkeh - you can't look at it as endorsement. Acer is much like the other sponsors we have. The difference here is that the relationship is negotiated and offers us members the opportunity of long term ongoing deals with this supplier. We're all free to pick and choose from other suppliers, and i'm sure in the future there may even be more outlets, or validated sponsors in a central EduGeek outlet. Just think of all our buying power channeled through one body (EG), able to ensure that the customers (us) are able to get a good deal, and have a channel for recourse if the service isn't up to scratch. I think carefully done, it's a really good thing.
john Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I will add, that I personally have not been impresse with what I have heard in the past about Acer, but I trust DB and Acer Man to ensure that this works, and as such will hopefully (fingers and finance permitting) be placing an order with him for a server in the next few days (just finishing some paper pushing and planning first). I wouldn't normally be putting trust in Acer for a Server after reading and hearing of the many problems of the past, but am confident that this arrangement with Edugeek will be a good one, and I trust Acer Man when he says that if it goes tits up that he will kick Acer's backside with and for us to get it sorted, so if I am putting that trust in them when my name and reputation is on the line (as I'm known for my amazingly reliable kit spec's and installs hence my use of HP Proliants in everything in the past) so I would hope others will also now do the same.
witch Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 For starters can you send one to a v.special mod. () the witch has been crying cos she didn't get one, and now i feel guilty Sorry Vikpaw - didn't see this post before - thanks sweetie I look forward to my mug - mind you, I work in two schools and I wouldn't want to break my mug carrying it from place to place and I have been waiting a very very long time for the prize I legitimately won, and I am a very nice person and and and... maybe I deserve two?
dalsoth Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Have had Acer laptops and a few computers in the past and they were rubbish. Poor quality. HP any day and failing them i would resort to Dell. I understand this site needs to pay it's bills so i can understand where the mods are coming from when they do things like this. After all i don't have to pay for the site to keep running out of my own pocket. One thing though. Explaining that you have had offers for user information from the site and that you would never consider giving it out is something that needs not be said. I have not inspected the site's terms and conditions and am no expert in law but that sounds like it would land you in court should you even have that in the back of your mind as an option. It is not something to use to justify your honesty. No offense meant. It is a great site and a great resource for those in education. I admit though i am not a great poster here and i do adblock all of the adverts on the site and rather enjoy the "by blocking ads you play into the hands of BSF" thingy as it makes me smile, don't know why. I block all ads for all sites and if a site goes under because it can't pay the bills then so be it. Hopefully if the members here liked the site enough they would all chip in and you would not need these sycophantic sales people posting how lovely they are all the time and how they care about us and our problems . Dislike sales people really and after years of hearing them say the same things it gets old. Just my thoughts, no offense to anyone intended. Nitey night.
GrumbleDook Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Had bad Acers ... and some good Acers. I prefer Dells and Macs myself and would have no objection to outlets for them either to be honest. Then again, I don't really have a need for spending personal cash right now and have to go through the, very rigorous, LA Procurement Policy that means I can't use it anyway :-( To be honest, it doesn't matter who DB partners with, there will be concerns raised by someone. It's the nature of the game to some extent :-(
