I have always been a fan of AMD chips, intel just seem to go for pure "I have an amazingly fast clockspeed!!!" wheras AMD chips have a slower clock, but perform just as good (or sometimes better) due to the architecture of the chip.

Better value for money if you ask me!

AMD Opterons rock. Go faster than Xeons, use less power, for less money and disappate less heat. Plus you get 64bit for free. I fail to understand why anyone bothers with Xeons anymore.

Because, every f***ing advert on tv is "some random computer WITH XEON TECHNOLOGY!!!...........that's right, all this for £xxx WITH XEON TECHNOLOGY!!!!!"

And I can't stand the voice that says it!!!

I've had an AMD athalon 64 2000 chip in my pc for nearly 3 years now, and it's never had any problems in terms of performance.

I am aware that it's comparitively slow now, and am planning an overhaul sometime this year.

You can just drop in a new AMD 64 X2 though if its a S939 board. I have the 4000+ personally. Plus with the new AMR2 socket CPU's coming out the price of 939 based CPUs will likely plummet.

Is that good Geoff? lol

I meant 'less heat to dissapate' of course. Which means you save money on your air con. :)

Thanks dude - are you offering to pay?? :p

Its not worth that much money i dont have methinks ;) I would have to wave bye-bye to the weekend break for my g/f if I bought that hehe

...I'd also have to wave goodbye to eating and drinking too i think hehe

But i do plan on getting a nice Athlon 64 3700+ and a nice shiney PCI-E 939 mobo & mid-range [or just cheap-ish] gfx card sometime before the summer.

Do HP do Opertons in their servers guys? Maybe I'll try one in the next server we buy.

I read too that AMDs shelf life on these chips makes them more suitable for businesses who typically need some resilliance.

...and we all could do with some resiliance hehe ;)

Especially when we get locked in our server rooms huh? :p

Sun don't sell Intel chips ;) Their new Opteron-based servers use the new dual-core, low power, chips too and come in a shiny chasis :D If only I'd bought mine a year later :(
