Free Recycling of Old Equipment?

Got a garage full of old CRT Monitors, Acorn Computers, few old printers, and desk PC's. Also a few other general electrical items (old OHP's etc).

 

Does anyone know any companies that will take it for free?

 

We are located in South Derbyshire.

ITR Recycling offers a free computer recycling service, allowing us to

fulfil your legal Duty of Care under both the Environmental Protection

Act and the Data Protection Act.

 

We are fully licensed to dispose of IT equipment and are fully

compliant with the WEEE Directive. Upon request our collection agents

will happily show you documentation, which you can check with the

regulations authority online or by telephone. All data is destroyed to

both UK Government and MOD standards, which are defined by the Security

Equipment Assessment Panel (SEAP) and CESG.

 

We accept all IT equipment - base units / towers, etc. Pentium 3s &

4s, laptops, monitors of all sizes, printers, cables, network

equipment, servers. We provide you with documentation you keep for your

records. There is absolutely no charge for our service.

 

We are situated in the West Midlands area, but are willing to do

collections anywhere linked in the UK for the right equipment.

That reads as though the equipment has to be in working order. If you do give them a call andy can you post here and let us know whether that is the case or not. I may call them myself tomorrow as I am also looking for equipment disposal.

Once more I will mention Freecycle- a Yahoo group you join in each area and then you can offer things you don't want.

I offered 8 old comps and monitors yesterday at 3pm - I mentioned that I don't even know if they work - and - by 4pm I had 6 replies and they are going today!

Can I just add... be cautious of companies with only a mobile number or gmail address as a contact method.

 

They may have all the best intentions, but if something was to go wrong (like your hdd on ebay after being recovered) then are they going to be held accountable.

 

I've never used recycling companies (but I'll have to shortly), but please please be careful. I've had lots of emails from companies like the one in the 2nd post of this thread. Half dont bother to respond to my requests (request to be removed from their list... surprise surprise) and the others seem to reply from various different addresses.

 

Prehaps they are valid and legit and follow all laws... but to me, alarm bells ring. If the company is that serious about doing business, why not get some proper contact details etc.

isnt there any legalities with using freecycle, i.e school policies that make sure a registered wee company only takes old school equipment because of the data protection act ect , im curious :ear:

Surely it would be OK if the disks were securely wiped? (Or, even better, removed and destroyed - but then you wouldn't have so many takers).

we have used SITR in the past although they are not free but they take all our old broken LCD panels, projector lamps, batteries etc too which need to be disposed of properly.

We have two separate networks: admin and curriculum, and I only deal with curriculum machines. So, there is no pupil data of any sort on the machines, just a few junior school software programs.

I wipe the disks and reformat. Sometimes if the disks are a reasonable size I will swap them out for old smaller disks I have about the place.

 

Frankly, I have never had a problem and have now found homes for upwards of 50 machines over the years.

Heh, this is the main company that keeps emailing me. I've seen them use the same mobile/site under at least 3 different names. 4 now.

ITR Recycling (above) are coming to collect 36 CRT monitors for us tuesday. No collection charge, no unit charge, all free. They assured me they will present us with all the legal paparwork etc

Will let you know how we get on.

Mate Recycling - Sounds as if they are after XP licences to be honest, I'd personally avoid.

 

If you've ever had any dealings with Stone computers, they now have a disposal place at their site.

 

It looks an awful lot like a meat grinder for computers.

To add to this thread we have just disposed of more than 80 Viglen Incepta II, associated TFT, several servers and some other odds and ends. I could not guarantee to those collecting the kit that it was in working order [although some of it was]

 

We tried to make sure that we were not just shifting unusable kit [or equipment that would be uneconomic to salvage/reprocess]

 

Charge for disposal: None.

 

They were very friendly and very prompt [they agreed to be on site at 10:00 this morning and that is when the arrived] They took all the kit without question. Excellent service!
