  1. https://jtmat.co.uk/vacancies/jtf-vacancies/ John Taylor Free School - Assistant ICT Technician - Permanent, full time position We are looking to recruit an Assistant ICT Technician to support our Lead ICT Technician with all aspects of technical support. In the current climate, effective IT access is more important than ever. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of the Lead Technician and will be able to work independently, and as part of a team. You will be willing to join a growing team of support staff and contribute wholly to the JTFS community. Experience in a school is less important – what we are looking for is enthusiasm for all the things that technology can do, to enhance education. We are in the fortunate position of being well resourced; we have a combination of PCs, laptops, chrome books, Interactive Displays and as a Microsoft school, we make extensive use of Microsoft 365. Join us, and you will have the opportunity to support our journey with effective use of technology. If you are excited about the prospect of joining a new school with a distinctive educational philosophy, we would like to hear from you. As a member of staff, you will be part of securing the vision of “succeed and thrive” for all members of our community. You will be prepared to be flexible, adaptable and dependable – you are willing to go above and beyond to help our students be outstanding learners and responsible young people. If you have a passion for excellence and share our vision, we can offer you the opportunity to be part of a successful and progressive Trust, which is committed to ensuring learning is at the heart of all we do. As a part of the National Forest Teaching School Alliance and working with The Staffordshire Research School at John Taylor we will focus on your development, whatever stage you are at in your career. As a research informed school with a coaching for excellence model, we want you to succeed and thrive too.
  2. Hi @foofighterjim Unfortunately not, but I haven't had chance to have another look at it over the past couple of weeks. I think I'd exhausted all possibilities anyway though... I had the same issue at all of the schools I tried setting it up at, so I think I can rule out anything possibly being blocked, but I think I may setup a test server at home just to confirm this. It's very odd, as Spiceworks used to be so simple to setup and it just worked... Now I haven't got a clue what its issue is. I'm also considering alternative options, as we need something we can rely on and actually works...
  3. Hehe, yes, I know what you mean It was working prior to us reimaging them. I can only assume that someone did something specific to configure it to work, and I just haven't spotted it yet. Either that, or it just doesn't like the latest fully updated build of Windows 10. Either way, I've suggested to the school to have a look at the web version if they do still wish to use RM Maths.
  4. We recently reimaged some PCs, however, unfortunately, since reinstalling RM Maths, the software launches fine, but we are then presented with the following error message upon selecting a pupil’s name. Project exception subuser not found Cause: ReadSubUserFromFile: no file The computers are running Windows 10 Education 64 bit. I’m hoping that you may be able to help, as it’s quite a heavily used piece of software in the school, and the pupils are missing being able to use it! I'm obviously aware that it is a very old piece of software, and has been unsupported for a long time, however, if I can get it working again, then that would be fab. Otherwise I will just get RM to quote me on their web based version. Obviously if anyone has any other suggestions for similar software or web sites, then I'd welcome them too.
  5. Opening via email works fine. It's not pulling them across at all.
  6. They are. That's the odd thing. It's almost as if Spiceworks just isn't pulling them through for some reason. I could understand if Spiceworks wasn't receiving any emails at all, as I'd assume something was just being blocked or incorrect with the config. But it's odd that the email tests complete okay and it receives the tickets okay, but not ticket updates...
  7. Hi, I am struggling to find a definitive answer to the issue I am experiencing with Spiceworks. The issue that I am experiencing is that Spiceworks does not seem to be receiving ticket updates sent via email. It receives the tickets fine, and is sending replies, the issue is it just not receiving updates. I feel like I have checked/tried everything... I even tried setting up a separate Google Account, instead of an Office 365 account, but that didn't make any difference. I have tried both imap and Exchange settings, and that didn't change anything either. Am I missing something really obvious? I'm hoping I can get this resolved soon, as I really want to get the helpdesks live at our sites. Many thanks in advance.
  8. Hi, Apologies if I am missing something really obvious, but one of the schools I support has noticed that their OneDrive now shows students on the autocomplete when they go to share a file. The students are hidden from the Global Address Book (but this only seems to apply to Outlook) They'd like to remove the students from the auto complete to remove the risk of a member of staff inadvertently sharing something with a student that shouldn't be. Any help would be much appreciated.

  10. Our Head of Performing Arts is looking for a new camcorder for filming performances for the Exam Board and for other filming purposes for Drama. Obviously you can get some pretty awesome camcorders these days for a reasonable figure, but I wondered if anyone could recommend any in particular. He doesn't really have a particular budget in mind (other than it being less then £1000) but I would be interested if anyone could recommend anything in £250-£350 price range, but also options for the £600 kind of price range. Specific requirements he would like are: Easy to transfer from Camera to computer Easy to browse through recorded videos when using the actual camera (i.e the ability to quickly view things recorded from a week before) Allow the usage of an External Microphone - sometimes he films outside, so a external mic may be useful to allow for windshield etc Hope someone has some suggestions I've been having a look through review sites as well, and have a couple in mind, but thought I'd see what other people suggested.
  11. So the short of it is, is that if we enforce stronger password integrity for staff users, then it should be fine? I see Home Access Plus also has a login tracker as well, so I guess if you keep an eye on that you can see if you have any "odd" attempted activity going on etc I'll have another look at it shortly. Do any other schools use this on non RM? We're on a Vanilla Server 2008 Network Thanks Andrew
  12. We just use Remote Assistance on staff PC's/Laptops. This way staff then have to grant you access, and you don't fall into the confidential data side of things.
  13. Hi We are currently looking at Remote Access Solutions for both Students and Staff (primarily staff, but students would be nice as well) Obviously we've looked at Rack Mount VPN Solutions for instance, but for the number of users inc Students, this would cost rather a lot. One other thing which recently caught my attention was the Home Access Plus system that is available (including seen on Edugeek) Home Access Plus+ My main query/concern with this though, is how secure is it? One other option which I saw yesterday, is we are currently looking to change our VLE, and we had a demo of FROG. FROG have an additional "add on" which allows Secure Remote Access to both files, and software on the Network, all securely. What are your thoughts? Which would you go for? Would appreciate feedback, and opinions. Are you an Home Access Plus school, how secure do you feel it is? Thanks Andrew
  14. All sorted now, our sites now back up and running Yep, it was just an idea really, basically I think it would be good if we were simply sent an e-mail, even if it was just to say that a letter regarding "X" i.e webserver changes has been sent out to your headteacher. This way, at least we can check with the head to see if they have seen it, and if not chase up what has happened to it. I can understand the reason for communications only being done by letter to the head, but at least this way we would know about something that affects us as Network Managers & Technicians, rather than it being unknown so to speak. Regards Andy
  15. Wish I'd seen this thread sooner The first I knew about something going on with our website was when I went to go on it a couple of days ago, only to be greeted by the default Plesk Web Server page lol. I had seen nothing of any letter (why they don't e-mail us as well is beyond me) - i.e. a generic e-mail saying that letters have been sent out... So I logged a call with helpdesk, and that's when they told me about the changes.....
  16. haha, oh well, they will have to buy the later software then
  17. We're now running a Vanilla Server 2008 setup, with all clients running Windows 7 Enterprise, after previously running a RM CC3 setup (Server 2003) with Windows XP Clients. I've been asked to put Metro Electro back on, but I was wondering, if it is even compatible with Server 2008/Windows 7? Or do the MFL department need to buy some new software
  18. Did you have any luck sorting this? I want to install it on our new SIMS Server too. Guess I'll log a call with RM. Typical of RM to use something which relies on something "outdated" so to speak.
  19. Does anyone know how to add the EMBC e-mail onto an HTC Wildfire? I added EMBC fine onto my Blackberry Curve, and now a member of our senior management would like access to his e-mails on his HTC. I have added all the pop settings ie mail.embc.uk.com smtp.embc.uk.com etc and the port numbers (ie exactly as you would if adding the account to Outlook, and as I did on my Blackberry) We have got the phone to RECEIVE e-mails, but not send them. Just thought I'd ask on the off chance of someone knowing or having any idea what might be going on.
  20. My Blackberry Curve 8520 does the job nicely for me
  21. Indeed. Also there are companies who assemble PC's for third world countries etc, who could probably make use of them. You know what they say, one man's junk is another man's treasure...
  22. We've had a couple of Kyocera FS 1350DN's just recently, seem to be really good, and have cheap printing costs
  23. Speaking as someone who is PAT Certified, then I think you'll find he is technically correct, as PC's without the front panel's therefore fail the "IP2X" (finger) test . Ie, you can touch exposed "live" metal parts, and someone could tamper with the internal cables and leave them at potential risk of fire (if they damage them). There is a lot more to PAT testing and risk evaluation than just saying "ah well, it's low voltage, no one's going to blow themselves up"
  24. We use Simply Pats. Sure it cost us £280 or something around that. But in my opinion it was worth every penny. Being able to download the results straight from the tester onto the software and produce print outs, certificates etc makes it all worth the money. You can also get it to e-mail you reminders when things need testing, and you can do all sorts with it.
  25. Was it Bill Jenkins (director @ Securus) that you spoke to? If not, then I'd ask to speak to him. We've had Securus for a couple of years now and find it great. We will definately be looking to purchase the NG box.
