We have 5 networked pc's in our staff room that are heavily used by student/trainee teachers. Also there are 22 network pint around the staff room for the staff to log in and use as and when with their laptops. As some staff (mainly in mobiles) do not have printers in their room we always map the 2 printers in the staff room to every member of staff laptop so they have printing options.

Currently we have 2 Brother 5170DN's in there for nearly two years( not much choice) but they they have took a right hammering over that time and are causing me more trouble than ever now. I would like to put a good robust/heavy duty laser in the staff room that would handle the volume sufficiently that the staff room takes.

Recommendations please.

second hp and kyocera.

We have HP 2300s, 2400s and kyocera colour lasers and *touches wood* they only have issues when users fiddle with them. If they're hammered during report times it's worth getting an additional paper tray. (he says, remembering the print queues with 30x 200 page jobs)

if you want a beastie look at the HP 4345 MFP, might be a touch expensive but its prolly faster than both the brothers put together and has a duty cycle of something dumb like 300K/month. It will double up as a copier/emailer if you need that sort of functionality and the staff would love you for it.

Get HP, nothing else comes close in our experience. As for the model, that depends on the workload it is expected to handle. A 2420/2430 gets you up to 24ppm and up to 75000 pages per month. A 4250 gets 43ppm and 200,000 pages per month.

One (fairly obvious) thing I would say, if you do get HP get one with an inbuilt JetDirect network card. We've tried to save money in the past by buying a stand alone model and a third party print server, always ended up regretting it.

I fully concur with Webman and others who specify the HP 4250 series we have 4 of these and at nearly 50 ppm they really serve the purpose well. cost of ownership is cheap as well pay for themselves within the warranty period. Static IP address install to print server and away you go with nothing to worry about. As for colour HP 4650n fantastic no probs have 4 of these, the one in the office is oldest nearly 4 years old and still going strong. XMA for toners and printers very cost effective.

Nothing like one of these babies to devastate the rain forests quicker hehe :D

We have 2 HP Laserjet 2300's in our sixth form and the little treasures havn't managed to break them in 2 years.

As a cheaper alternative the 1320 is also quite good.

HP2420dn are what I use here and I find them to be "teacher" proof.

I would go with the HP LaserJet 4250n we have 2 in the admin office and used in all IT Suites that have high volume - very reliable and as said if you have a crappy old printer you can get a rebate from HP

our last 4250n we sent HP an old Laserjet III that was lying in our cupboard they sent £99 under the rebate program

There are some demon deals on HP4250n at the moment. Got one just before half-term from http://www.bechtle.co.uk for £525 + VAT!

We've pretty much standardised on HP printers - absolutely bullet-proof. We've had several LaserJet 4000/4050s running in Computer Rooms & Staff Room for 7 or 8 years without a single glitch.

We are about to buy a HP Laser jet 2300n, just wondering if anyone knew of any deals on anywhere with these at the mo similar to the rebate scheme HP were running earlier in the year.

http://welcome.hp.com/country/uk/en/promotions.html is your best place to look, and I cannot see any offers on Printers this month, or Servers :( So nothing on them. BUT If you don't mind changing make, Samsung are giving a life time warranty on a lot of there lasers until December (yes they extended it till December), so may be worth looking at them instead.

Edit, If I could learn to click a bit more, I would have found a huge list of HP offers:

http://h41112.www4.hp.com/price_cat_rss/index.php?cc=uk&ll=en&segment=smb

they have some B&W lasers, but not the one you want, they have the 2420dn and some colour ones.

I notice they have the DL380 G5s with free double memory as well, should be a good buy for anyone server hunting.

@tosca925: If I was you I would reconsider and get a 2nd-user 4100n. 1st Technologies (01254 878800) will probably sort you out with one for £150 and the toner I ordered today (10k cartridge) cost a mere £62.

He is currently quoting £120 for a HP 4100 with JD card.

Or rather, was last week.

Prices can vary wildly dpending upon stock and mood ;) £150 is the max Stuart will ever charge.
