Idiots on the road though - a lot of ice around, yet they whizz around like nothing's happened. No common sense.

Sirbendy Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 We're still open in Telford. Roads are clearish - main roads are OK if you're careful - a few bits aren't great, side roads are a gauntlet. I'm glad I have an auto..stick it in snow mode, leave it in drive, foot off the throttle and let it crawl over the bad bits at 2-3mph. If I skid, it's too slow to damage much.

Especially the little bit of slush I saw on the news last night ;p Round here the main roads are clear of snow but the side roads are not. The school car park is like a skating rink as is the playground. Many of the teachers don't live locally and some cannot actually get to school without coming in a car! Also many of the pupils cannot get here either. Though I agree that a small amount of snow should not mean the school is closed entirely - but then it's not my decision and I don't have to deal with H&E claims either.

Especially the little bit of slush I saw on the news last night ;p Have to admit, I'm surprised more schools aren't open.... there are opportunities in this weather! Our steep hilly site was quite dangerous yesterday. The path from the main building down to the pre-school levels out onto a platform outside the building and was more like a ski-jump - with the playground further down the hill as a landing area! The caretaker says the slight thaw yesterday evening and a bit more snow in the night have now turned the route to the bottom of the hill into the Cresta Run. I think it would have been an opportunity to diversify the inter-house sports competitions. Ski-jumping... luge (assuming the kitchen would let us have some trays)... Speed skating on the pond...

Especially the little bit of slush I saw on the news last night ;p It's starting to turn into ice though, at least round here, and you have to take into account the safety of staff and students travelling to and from school in the ice. I took the option to walk.

If this kind of weather happened more frequently it would make sense to have the equipment, but it is used so infrequently (I think they're saying that the last winter like this was 20 years ago), it makes more sense to spend the money on other things.

SteveBentley Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 I'd pre-booked yesterday off (although the snow put paid to my plans for the day off). I've never known the uni close for snow in the 11 years I've been here (as a student then as staff) although it seems a lot of people haven't made it in due to the weather or having to look after their kids who are off school. Just had confirmation that a meeting at 4.15 this afternoon is goin to happen so I can't even escape early
