tarquel Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 Hi all Just wondering what everyone does with old hardware? i.e. do ya bin it, recycle it, donate it, etc. Like for example I have a load of ancient pc's which i've just stripped, held on to any good bits, and then smashed the hell out of the old HDD's and skip'ed. I have a Netgear EN524 (24 porth 10M switch with BNC connector) just lying in the back. Just wondering if I should bother keeping it or not. Maybe as a backup switch if one decides to snuff it lol What does everyone else do with their old unused/faulty stuff? Cheers Nath

Since he deals in a lot of 2nd user and bankruptcy gear, he often has to dispose of stuff so he disposes of my stuff at the same time. I only pay for disposal of dead monitors (£5 each - BARGAIN!).
tarquel Posted July 21, 2005 Author Posted July 21, 2005 Recycle what I was chucking I doubt think would be use to anyone lol - a few Cyrix 486 PC' - a few AMD K6 333hmz - dead pretty much - a few Intel celeron based toshiba ones that refused to allow me to do anything to fix them. They were only 433 mhz as well - various old HDD's and stuff problem here is that I cant donate or recycle them. There's a yard down the road but not driving and wouldnt be given the money for the petrol either (stingy git I am lol - not really) plus more time spent doing that while I've plenty to entertain myself with as it is this hol.... /rant over lol Anyone else? russdev Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 we chucking load as most of it not of any use so stripped own parts and then chucked rest inc some rm 186's... tip to chuck monitors in a skip out them in skip and smash screen then can chuck them... Also remember after this month computers are classed as hazard waste so school needs to contact council and after December you are not allowed to chuck any workable electronic equipment... Russ

MkII Posted July 21, 2005 Posted July 21, 2005 PCC IT Nath pay £11 per PC to dispose of them. We're supposed to do something similar but it's difficult in our area. I use a local recycling yard in town - I don't use our car for work either, so I just get some kind soul to drop it off for us.

john Posted September 20, 2005 Posted September 20, 2005 We send ours off to charity, they are called Give youth a hand, and basically anything that can run Win 98 or better they will take, and all we do is datawipe the hard disks with Blancco Datacleaner, and then ring our local contact up and he collects them all and off they go to Croatia, Serbia etc....

adamyoung Posted October 17, 2005 Posted October 17, 2005 We've just had to get rid of 200+ old comps, monitors etc It is now criminal simply to throw screens away as they are classed as hazardous waste under the new european waste directive. The school could receive a significant fine. Sadly most people have to pay for a company to take them but we did manage to find a local company who would do it for free. "With effect from 16th July 2005, the Special Waste Regulations will become the Hazardous Waste Regulations. Televisions and monitors containing cathode ray tubes (CRT) are categorized under the European Waste Catalogue (EWC) as a hazardous waste This means that after 15th July 2005, there will be a number of changes that affect the way sites are registered, movements monitored and costs of movements. It will be an offence to produce at, remove, or transport hazardous waste from any premises unless the Environment Agency has been notified about those premises. Details of how to register can be found via the internet at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/newrulesonwaste. There will also be an annual fee that needs to be paid to the EA."
Sirbendy Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 The NGFL have a scheme in place in Telford where you stack up the old kit, fill in a form, and they'll remove it for you FOC and deal with the recycling. We cleared out all bar 10 of our p2 machines this summer, plus all the old junk we'd accumulated in store cupboards all over the building, all the naffy old monitors and dead Laserjet IIs etc. We pretty much filled up a stairwell. Nice now to have the space! It turns out that after NGFL took it all to a lockup, someone broke into it and nicked all the scrap kit..heh. Muppets.
indiegirl Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 We've used Schools Connect before... over the summer they took our 15" CRTs for free... we threw a few useless older machines on the van and they neglected to charge us for them Other than that, if the machines aren't Selectamark'd, then they go via Freecycle to anyone who wants to collect them. Certainly, any odd bits of hardware that's useless goes that way as well...

indie Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 We get rid of stuff on them with DBAN, then ship them out to various places within the council (Secondary Schools, Primary Schools, Youth Clubs etc). We just upgraded all of our machines to x64 P4s, networked game of Brothers in Arms anyone?
