Number of Servers

How many servers do you guys have at your school, I have 3, admin, curric and mail. I'm starting to think that we might need a seperate server to power our proxy software as it's starting to cause problems.

 

Does anyone have less or more servers than me?

I guess it depents on the number of clients you have and how much resiliance you want. we have two domain controlers per network a Nas and San for file storage and 2 sims servers (total 8 8) ) but are looking to create a forest so that data can be retrieve from either domain. This plus 450 clients and three members of overworked staff...

We run 1 admin server/network.

 

1curriculum network with 2 RM CC3 servers (plus a 2.4 server which we're planning to decom soonish, once people get all their crap off of it, and we have an email solution to replace NTmail). (am planning to recom the 2.4 into a file server or media or something).

 

So thinking about it, we have 4.

9 of ours were set to DC by the firm that installed them (not under my direction!!)

It doesn't look a very efficient use of harware; I was pondering this the other day. I could combine 3 servers (print, intranet and development). We could also double the number of thin clients without increasing server capacity. We have lots of room to grow.

I came to the conclusion early on that just because your hardware can take all these multiple roles it doesnt mean it's a good idea because when it decides to hiccup it takes so much with it. So now I spread everything around as much as I can.

Now considering we only run 170 Desktops (50 more soon enough) and 40 odd laptops that does seem alot now I look at it but at least everything is spread around nicely.

Theres some servers you must have 2 of at least DCs for example.

Some of my "servers" arent actually proper server hardware but are some Dell SFF PCs sat on a shelf in my rack but these are the Exam Server (Not needed all year round and limited use when in use) and my two test servers, one for Linux and one for Terminal Services.

Sorry, that was rude, do you have computers? or the internet? and possibly have them communicating with each other? otherwise you're about 10-15+ years behind

Are you a High School? You can get away with it at Primary Level (depending on the size) but for a high school not to have a server.......... Im guessing you dont have too many PCs either and the man is chasing you about Computer to pupil ratio ? That or you have some old non Windows network?
