This is a weird one.

I have a pupil telling me they are hearing voices coming from their computer speakers when there is nothing else playing.

He has recorded these voices into his phone and they seem to be making a religious speech. He tells me a virus/spam/malware scan has been done.

A Google search has revealed nothing.

Any ideas?

Not that un-common, most propably picking up a radio station on an FM/VHF freq.

I get the police & sometimes mini cab drivers on my speakers at home in my loft office..... The speakers are acting as a radio detector. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detector_(radio)

...spooky...

I had it once, thought i was going mad. I had been updating a load of laptops and when i had finished id shut the lid. So im stood in a middle of this room, lots of laptops around me which i thought were off or at least on Standby. I kept hearing this male voice. But then it would stop. Turned out it was a program that had been upgraded running on a laptop that hadnt shut down properly. It was really freaky.

Only time we had a problem with strange noises coming from a machine, was one of the staff laptops the mic had been turned on and he was saying he could hear clicking noises as he was typing, turned out to be as he typed the mic was playing him typing through the speakers.

Kids pulling your leg... if not, remember the gold rule for windows - Reinstall.

Not my golden rule for windows, taking that attitude would mean not learning anything.

Depends really on the problem. A faulty user profile is easier to delete and recreate then it is to troubleshoot.

You have to think about the total time to resolve. It takes about 10mins of my time to get a machine reinstall, it takes about 3 hrs for it to complete (RIS + SMS). It's easier for me (or was), then look at how they have done it.

I would however, go to the pc, if I could hear it I would look at the reg, startup, services etc, if nothing was easy to find, I would just reinstall.

I've had a machine which came up saying it wasn't genunie, it was installed exactly the same. I can't be arsed to investigate how to fix it, I just found out how it was broken and who by, then reinstalled.

It's client at the end of the day, it has nothing on it, everythings on the server, even that's backed up. Tho I won't recommend reinstall more then 1 every 3 yrs.

I'm pretty sure, unless you bored and have nothing better to do, you can spend hours trying to fix it, but I've yet to meet a school who would hire such a person. If you do hear of anyone, let me know :p

That happens to me on my PC also. There is many a time I am just ready to nod off in bed when some guy comes from nowhere. The PC is off but the speakers remain on standby!
