Redirect Student Recycle Bin to Storage Box

Hi,

 

I am wanting to start a project so that I can redirect all Staff and Students Recycle bin to a workstation that has say 2 x 1TB HDD's which purge themselves every month to free up space.

 

This would be usefull to me as I have alot of Staff and Students that loose work! With this is place I would be able to connect to the share and copy the deleted file back onto their work area.

 

Any thoughts on how this might be done?

Apparently this is a feature of RM CC4, however I've not seen this done in a vanilla environment. Could be an interesting project!

Vista Business lets the recycle bin follow the user, so you should be able to redirect it if you have Vista. Not sure how to with XP.

Symantec have a product called 'Continuous Protection Server'. I think that is the correct name. We used it for a while as part of BackupExec 10.

 

Pupils could log in and retrieve their own work as it backed up as they saved.

 

It used loads of space and in the end we binned it simply because we didn't have time to manage it.

I was thinking more a long the lines of a script that would use environment variables to redirect to a share on a data box rather than a solution that can be bought! A simple file transfer of deleted work to a give place on the network for backup and restore in case of emergency.

 

Ill do some digging and let you know when I find anything.

You might be able to do this Undelete Server Undelete 2009 Product Overview – Recover Files in Seconds if you purchase the client addon too (per machine).

 

We use undelete on some of our servers.

We used to have it running on the main student file server, their docs were all stored in d:\users\year\group\name, but we stored it's recycler bin on e:, this was to stop the deleted files being part of their file quota (I think this was one of the reasons it was slowed down so much).

 

If you also get the client app, installed on the machines, users can access only their deleted files.

 

We never did this, I took fright at the costs involved.

 

We also found that the server slowed down when running the Undelete server AND Diskkeeper server, but it was (and still is) Windows Server 2000, 1x Xeon 2.0 Ghz (actually it may be slower than this), 1Gb RAM - which is fine for file serving, but crappy if we wanted to run some apps on it too.
