What do people do with out of support Laptops, with regards to having them on your network?

We have a bunch of the Dfe HP 255\245\250 Laptops that HP don't support our current version of Windows 11 (25H2)

Were currently having problems with the Wifi networks not showing upon login to the device.

Thanks

I'm sweating them as far as they'll go on Windows 11 at the moment, I've not found a device yet that won't take it, they're just slower. ChromeOS Flex is a good option too though.

For those HP 245 / 250 / 255 devices in particular, is there a hard reason why they're "not supported" on Windows 11 25H2?* For your wireless issues, I'd try the wireless card manufacturer and see if they've done an updated driver, or, check Windows Update if you've not already.

*Also interested cos we've got a couple of those too

A device that will no longer receive OS updates gets taken off our managed domain. For us this mostly means Chromebooks or MacOS machines with a well-defined support cutoff date. Any devices too old to be supported by their original OS we'll try ChromeOS Flex on (that doesn't work for Chromebooks, obviously). We've had issues with ChromeOS Flex issues on our staffroom Mini PCs (they all just stopped booting after a particular update) and on older iMacs (no support for the wireless hardware), so do check ChromeOS Flex does actually work as expected on your particular hardware before you plan too far ahead.

When you say, not supported, what makes them so please as we have a few of these and just starting to push out W11 25h2 - or by not supported do you mean W11 itself goes on OK but you're having problems with WiFi?  As long as the CPU, amount of RAM and SSD size (along with TPM chip) is OK then it should be support I thought?

If you've tried updating via drivers available from HP and even the chip manufacturers website and still no luck with WiFi then try using Snappy Driver to update your WiFi drivers and then try again.

Everything W11 even if its not supported, In place upgrades usually will not work as it checks the specs of the machines, but a wipe and rebuild striaght to the latest H2 is working for us. (Non of our staff machines are below spec however and take the roll ups as normal)

We too have a few 250's.

We have a number of the HP 250 G5 laptops which are still running 1809 LTSC but for a test I imaged one with win 11 24H2 then as part of the process installed 25H2. Everything is working fine.

It's not all about the OS, you should also consider the security risks of devices not having updated BIOS / Firmware....

Yes your right of course but that would rule out 90% of our machines
