nicholab Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 Does taxing a new car online ever work? Why is an option if it never works? This also mean you technically can’t buy a car on a Sunday as the post office is closed.
Roberto Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 To answer your two questions and one statement in order: Yes. I can't remember the last time I didn't use this facility. Because it does work. That would be true if it really didn't work. 1
3s-gtech Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 I get through a lot of cars, and regularly SORN/re-tax them. It just works online, using the green slip or V5C. Recently taxed one at the Post Office because I had to change the taxation class.
DalekSec Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 Going to be honest, didn't know you could still do tax via the Post Office, ive been driving 10 years and only ever done it online.

LeMarchand Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 I've never bought a new car, but the last few cars have all been done online. How else do you drive it away?
3s-gtech Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 Trade plates or trailer it. Not commonly an option though! Or you wing it and hope you don't get caught (commonly done, very bad idea!)
Olliedawg Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 I always do mine online, never had an issue
TechMonkey Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 Only issue I had was that the service closes after hours for some reason. Though they may have stopped that by now. Otherwise it was always flawless. One of the government online services that worked well and did what it needed to do without extra fluff.
nicholab Posted September 16, 2025 Author Posted September 16, 2025 The last 3 vehicles it said not available online when I put the reg and the new keeper code. Is this also an issue of being in Norther Ireland.
sigma Posted September 16, 2025 Posted September 16, 2025 With "new" cars the dealer normally does this for you, and charges.
