PurpleTentacle Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 Is anyone having issues with reCAPTCHA? I've been unable to access two sites protected by reCAPTCHA. Did someone turn me into a robot while I wasn't looking?

NegativeKillDeath Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 Do you mean its just cycling and endless stream of bicycles, traffic lights, or stairs for you to identify? We had this Friday last week accessing StepLab. Using a different browser worked for our affected users. 1

Yes, but Chrome does exactly the same as Edge. 1 hour ago, PICNIC said: You using Smoothwall by any chance? We have the same issue! Yes, but I excluded my IP so it isn't getting any filtering/inspection.
PICNIC Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 Quote Yes, but I excluded my IP so it isn't getting any filtering/inspection. Are you using the Cloud filter with secret knock? 1
PurpleTentacle Posted June 30, 2025 Author Posted June 30, 2025 Just now, PICNIC said: Are you using the Cloud filter with secret knock? No, the invisible proxy / bridge.
PICNIC Posted June 30, 2025 Posted June 30, 2025 Quote No, the invisible proxy / bridge. Sorry for all the questions Does all your traffic use one external IP? 1

denzal2k4 Posted July 11, 2025 Posted July 11, 2025 We are seeing the same, any updates on a resolution?
PurpleTentacle Posted July 11, 2025 Author Posted July 11, 2025 I haven't been presented with a reCAPTCHA for some days. Just tried the site I was having issues with... Still broken. Might have to contact the site and get them to investigate it.
JackMatthewsSH Posted August 14, 2025 Posted August 14, 2025 Hi there guys - we've had the same issue where you get re-captcha-ed over and over again. Also using a Smoothwall for filtering. It was an issue before the Summer holidays, and it's just been noticed again today with staff in for exams. Any updates on fixes at all? Many thanks.
Joeloman Posted August 14, 2025 Posted August 14, 2025 The most common error is that the browser needs to be updated.
tom_newton Posted August 14, 2025 Posted August 14, 2025 I'll dig through our support tickets and see if there's anything to escalate. A lot of google searches coming from one IP can trigger recaptchas but I have never seen uncompletable before.
tom_newton Posted August 14, 2025 Posted August 14, 2025 Nothing obvious - if anyone who is suffering from capchas that can't be solved could ping me a ticket in, and email me the number ([email protected])
PaddyNewman Posted August 14, 2025 Posted August 14, 2025 Got any logs/URLs attempted for vpns? Do they tie to byod/users mobiles. Rise of vpns for 'reasons' will be a factor in captchas which will likely rise when term starts...
BlueSkies Posted October 16, 2025 Posted October 16, 2025 Just digging this one up ... is anyone else suffering from the reCAPTCHA issue. Our seems to go in a never-ending loop of sidewalks, motorbikes and buses - no way to get through it! Is there any way of stopping this from happening?!
JackMatthewsSH Posted October 16, 2025 Posted October 16, 2025 The recommendation from Smoothwall was to remove "Google - Web search (basic mode)" from the content modification policy. I've made this change and whilst I'm not 100% sure it's been fixed, I've not heard back from the school on it re-occuring...! Explanation of keeping "Google - Web search (basic mode)": "Basic mode gives us a bit more information about the images in image search, so we can block images from sources we don't like"
BlueSkies Posted October 16, 2025 Posted October 16, 2025 Thanks, although the school isn't a Smoothwall user so I might see whether similar changes can be made to the filtering policy. 🙂 1
carnforthhigh Posted October 20, 2025 Posted October 20, 2025 We get reCAPTCHA'd constantly when signing into Google services - ChromeOS sign-in, Chrome Browser profile sign-in or signing in to individual websites using Google accounts. It subsided over the Summer break. We are using a Sophos XGS - if anyone has any ideas or even better any resolutions I'm all ears. The reCAPTCHAs we get are sometimes unreadable so as you can imagine, the students are going through multiple every sign in.
DrCheese Posted October 20, 2025 Posted October 20, 2025 Hi This is your fix https://kb.smoothwall.com/hc/en-us/articles/19066938031132-Cloud-Filter-issues-with-Chrome-v134 It's an issue with Chrome browsers reading ahead every link. It means it ends up googling... google ad infinate.
carnforthhigh Posted October 21, 2025 Posted October 21, 2025 I've applied the setting and will monitor - thanks
tom_newton Posted October 21, 2025 Posted October 21, 2025 It can be exacerbated by proxies. If you have a few external IP addresses, moving to a different one might help.
carnforthhigh Posted October 21, 2025 Posted October 21, 2025 Yes, the traffic was all going through one external IP - this has been divided up now. The issue only started when we deployed ChromeOS Flex devices out for student use - the timing of this could be a coincidence with the Chrome setting change with v134. 1
