Cloud Backup Prices

Our servers are offsite stored with the MSP and looking at the invoices is making me dizzy. The latest invoice is for a 1TB Ahsay backup at £1800. Ahsay appears to work well and the MPS has recovered files when we ask them but seems very expensive. What are other schools paying for a cloud backup?

I honestly think your much better off arranging with another local(ish) school to put a Synology NAS in to their sever room and keep Veeam backup copy backup on that.  That satisfies everything needed regarding Buildings/Off Site/Security etc.

Yes I was thinking the same but as the servers are offsite there's no reason not to have the NAS in school but the only problem I can see is the internet speed as the school is using a 100Mb line and pulling the data down would take a while.

It would but youll be transferring overnight when no ones using it and you don't need to transfer the whole lot over night just the changes?  Or even just copying over the weekend would be far better than nothing.

Take a look at Redstor as they've changed their licensing model so it's based on employee numbers rather than per TB (like how Microsoft license you by number of staff and not the number of devices you install Windows on).

You have to have a way to get it there, but we use Wasabi through AutoData.  They charge £5.99 per TB per month, minimum of 5 TBs, so £29.95 per month.

We use Veeam and it is seamless.

Student numbers rather than Employee numbers (at least when we bought it).

 

Still cheap though.  There are different price per student tiers dependent on your numbers.

Redstor do a schools bundle now based on your total pupils, unlimited storage and your cloud stuff.

 

Ranges from £500-1300 atleast for our schools

+1 for this; we have used Wasabi delivered by AutoData for a few years now. We use Altaro rather than Veeam but it's completely seamless with native support in the Altaro UI. I've done numerous test restores over the years and had no issues.

We use Peasoup cloud, pay about £250 per year per 1TB of cloud storage. We have Veeam licencing bundled into this too, which is much cheaper than what we were paying previously.

We've been using DPM for our back-up solution since around 2015, we buy around £1200 worth of Azure credits a year and depending on the amount of data kept top it up occasionally.

We use Backblaze, £6 per TB per month. We probably have around 4TB of actual active data (accross a few local servers and Googel Drive), plus extra for keeping previous versions going back a few months, so maybe around 7TB per month = maybe £50-ish per month = around £600 per year. Just looking at Peasoup to get an idea pricing but I'm confused at the different options. From the pricing page https://peasoup.cloud/pricing/ I have chosen backup service (cloud storage) and Veeam Cloud Connect and on the next page it have a number of different options that I am unsure about.

 

For background info the MSP is charging £1800 for 1TB of storage and this is backing up the file server, sims server and the AD. Those servers are VMs held with the MSP and we do not have access to the VMs so any backup agents used will need to be installed on the server and backup just the files and not the whole VMs.

I found it easier to actually speak to someone at Peasoup rather than using the quote tool. 

 

We have the Storage, Veeam Cloud Connect & Veeam enterprise licences.

£1,800 a year for hosting, backing up and possibly managing Active Directory doesn't sound bad, you might be comparing somewhat different things. Backblaze's £72 a year per TB is for raw storage space - depending on how many previous versions you want to hold you might need 2 or 3 TB of storage space to keep backups for 1 TB of live data.

£1800 is just for the backup option so the 1TB of backup storage using Ahsay software and recover any files on request. The backup retention period is 31 days and should be much longer in my opinion. All AD management come under another charge.

In that case i'd say it's pretty expensive!

All I can tell you is that we get unlimited storage with Redstor and they were significantly cheaper than before and much cheaper than Microsoft SCDPM which was too much for one of our Primary Academies to afford.

Tell me about it and don't get me started on the internet connection price £4840 just for a 100Mb connection with Netsweeper filter.
