I've used Twitter for around 10 years but recently decided to jump ship. Over the last 12 months I have tried mastadon, threads and now settled for BlueSky. I don't post much at all and mainly use it as an RSS feed for news and sport as well as a few celebs and a sprinkling of others. Has anyone else felt the nee dto leave Twitter and find somewhere else? Are you thinking of moving away as a school to something Twitter-like?

Nothing else has really made itself available - threads is the nearest but frankly I would strongly recommend deleting and not looking back - personally and for school. If they feel something is "missing" then perhaps putting a little more effort in LinkedIn might help; from experience most Twitter engagement is B2B/school to school which crosses over with LI nicely. At least the spam on LI is more palatable.

I'm on my last step with Twitter.. can't believe it has come to this.

Facebook had problems with fake ads (still does) and the usual fake meme trope being shared.. but I can usually block them.. but Twitter .. just constant..... spam spam spam..... all the usual trope.

I hear things about Threads but.. dunno.. think I'll just quit Twitter. Once upon a time I found it useful, the news didn't always cover things....

On the school org use side, in my mind this question is not so far away from asking which brand of tobacco a school should be recommending. A little reductio ad absurdum perhaps, but comparisons with other, less lethal public health threats are available (fatty snacks, sugary drinks, gambling sites).

Why not just set up an RSS reader app and pick relevant feeds?

I probably will while some of my preferred news sources are missing but I liked following some journalists directly and seeing their engagement on twitter enhanced the experience.

I think I'm now settled on the Butterfly (Bluesky) site because most of the people I followed or interacted with on Twitter have more or less all turned up now.

There's quite a lot of traction at the moment of people moving to BlueSky but staying on X as well! I've half jumped ship and created a BlueSky account just so I've got the name I want.

Since setting up an account on bluesky a couple of weeks ago, I've not found myself opening Twitter/X at all.

I'd previously tried Threads and Mastodon (still on Mastodon, and still check it most days) but Neither managed to supplant the place Twitter had in my habits.

Judging by the notification badge, there's a joke in here about Twitter behaving like a needy ex, but that is perhaps best left for others.

Yeah I think Bluesky is where I am at - @tdnewton.bsky.social anyone done an Edugeekers starter pack?

Edugeekers starter pack is a great idea! markouk.bsky.social is me

In spite of my post earlier citing public health risks, I've created myself a Bluesky account to see whether I can get anything meaningful out of social media (I don't use any others).

I'm still perplexed as to the whole point of social media, so I'm basically approaching it from the perspective of using it a bit like as RSS reader. Only with lower information density, the list of my subscriptions being necessarily public and lots of words being attached to stuff from random people I neither know or care about.

Bluesky is interesting from a technicaly perspective: the decentralisation idea ("protocols over platforms") and being able to use a domain name as a handle are neat ideas. I've noticed that there is a official EduGeek account, so is using "edugeek.net" as a handle something that's planned?

Ultimately, I just don't really care enough about random other people's posts/replies, etc. to put up with it! I'm not one for playing online games against randoms, so I guess this is just that in another form.

I'm still perplexed as to the whole point of social media,.

I think the Simpsons said it best: "Instead of one bigshot controlling all the media, there's a thousand freaks xeroxing their worthless opinions."

I tried Bluesky, but what I assume is the "default feed" was just people moaning about the US election so I gave up on it. Maybe I'll try again later when I have the time to curate out all the nonsense.

As for the school, if you're going to use any SM, then you want it to be where the current and upcoming parents are at.
