Here is a colaborative list of what think is essential software on our school PC's. Please post comments or suggestions to be added to the list or PM *me* to update the post :)

Remote repair and assistance software:

 

- VNC (various builds include UltraVNC [custom available on request], TightVNC, RealVNC and some others)

Can do - is the wiki system members only tho?

 

If not, then anyone cud alter a link to some baaaaaad spyware infested site or sumthin tho lol (Mr Negative here lol)

 

Its no bother to me to update the list though you see :) What do the other admins/mods think?

I will when get around to it intergrate wiki into membership system (summer project)..

 

But if someone kacks it can restore previous version by going to recent versions and restoring an old version.

My essential software (all free AFAIK)

 

In no particular order...

 

Aida32 (3.93) - I use a script to execute this once a day on every networked PC. The results are recorded on the server. Provides a simple harware & software audit

 

AutoIT 3 - If you can't package it, wrap it or script it, you can usually AutoIT (sorry!) - Amazing piece of software. Get the SCiTE editor package to go with it.

 

DaemonTools - Thankyou, thankyou, thanyou Mr DaemonTools whoever you are. No more shall we pay Avantis ridiculous prices for CD serving! Virtual CD drives

 

UltraVNC - Now almost perfect. Just waiting for the fully integrated encryption...

 

Angry IP Scanner - Useful for troubleshooting and port scanning

 

Burn At Once - Quick and easy ISO image ripper/creator/burner

 

Office Viewers (Word2003/Excel2003) - Useful on servers to read .DOc and .XLS files

 

Process Explorer (SysInternals) - Much more useful than task manager

 

RBFG2 (Remote Boot Floppy Generator 2) - Not sure where I picked this up, but basically it builds RIS boot disks and supports a few extra NICs that the standard MS RBFG

 

Robocopy (XP Resource Kit) - Ultimate (along with XXCOPY) command line copy utility. Copy files with permissions, synch folders and all that jazz

 

SUS/WSUS - SUS was ace, it just worked. WSUS seems a bit more fussy, but I'm still getting used to it

 

DaemonScript - Handy add-on for DaemonTools that enables shortcuts to be created which auto-map drives to ISO images

 

Energy Star EZ GPO - Control everyones power settings, including the logon screen

 

Orca - Fairly simple app, but absolutely indespensible when working with MSIs. (unless you are posh and have WISE)

 

Windows Installer Command Line Builder - Free tool from Wise which builds those tricky MSIEXEC command lines.

 

Windows Installer Wrapper Wizard - Quickly wraps silent installs in simple MSI package

 

VNC Neighbourhood - Scans the LAN for VNC servers. Very slick

 

Joes Components - Makes scripting life a lot easier (INI files, decent registry access)

 

Entech Multires - Useful when a bit of software changes the screen resolution/refresh rate.

 

Group Policy Management Console - Well done Microsoft, you're getting the hang of it now..

 

UPHClean - Clean up after user logoff

 

Policy Maker Registry Extension - Need to make registry adjustments via GP? This is the freebie for U

 

Office Resource Kits - Essential when deploying Office via GP that is...

 

SourceEdit - Great freeware editor for .VBS files

 

NLite - Build your own custom OS disks/ISO images. Sliptream service packs and more...

For my USB drive:

 

Portable Firefox

Abyss Web Server (http://www.aprelium.org), configured with PHP and SQL for web dev on the move

WS_FTP (for uploads)

RAdmin (since we use it for remote assistance)

Portable Openoffice

 

For my workstation

VMWare (for testing builds)

PE Builder (Windows PE on the cheap, ideal for system recovery/ghosting)

A quick update - For people wanting Quicktime less Itunes. If you download the installer from apple, and just open it with WINRAR, you can just pick out Quicktime and use it on its own, I have done so, very sucessfully.
