Including in lessons a student who is pretty much permanently at home

We have a student with CFS so is at home pretty much all the time as they are unable to get to school. It has been requested that we look in to how they can be included in lessons. We use Teams, but is this an option? Is it as simple as chuck a webcam and mic in the classroom and stream it to the student, or does it fall under GDPR etc. as we are streaming voices and images of everyone else in the room. OK, we're only streaming it to someone who would otherwise be in that room anyway and see/hear it all in an ideal world, but I just thought I should check.........

 

Obviously checking with DPO at our school for input as well.

We had similar after lock down, students in over countries etc (boarding school).

 

Did it with teams, webcam pointing at board and sharing screen seemed to do the job. From GDPR point of view i believe my manager at the time looked into and ok'd it.

The teachers create the Teams Lesson and share the join link with the student.

Yeah, pretty much just a webcam and mic needed. Can just point the class webcam to the whiteboard.

In the unlikely event the student does turn their camera on, make sure that they know how to select backgrounds to prevent uninvited others from peering into their home. Maybe offer a headset with microphone so that their leaning at home has some privacy from their family much as it would at school? (They might have to participate from a shared family space or shared bedroom).

We're doing this with Ipads on tripods at the school end (repurposed iris equipment) and a chromebook at the student end utilising Google Meet through Classroom. At one point we had 4 students in one class doing this for various medical and behavioural reasons.

We're using Google Meet with us being mostly a Google school. Presentations on the board (Google Slides, PowerPoint, etc.) just use the screen share function. Our teachers also teach quite a bit of the curriculum out of paper booklets, so if it's that or marking past papers etc. we use the IPEVO V4K visualiser - probably the most used teaching tool in our school, even before COVID hit. Well worth the investment if you ask me. Staff aren't allowed to point visualisers at the class. Students at home are almost always on a school-owned Chromebook, so we just use the Chrome OS policies to restrict camera usage.

I don't think I like the idea of the screen share as I wouldn't trust staff not to share their Outlook or SIMS with the student! We too have a bunch of the IPEVO V4K visualisers. The staff love them.

 

Thank you all for your input. It does confirm pretty much what I was thinking but when it comes to things like this I will never assume. Good thought about the blurring etc.
