k-strider Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 So with the announcement of end of support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025 I was wondering what people were planning to do? we have just over 100 Pre 8th Gen Intel NUCs - 2 x32 IT rooms that are due to be replaced this year and next anyway but that’s still quite a lot of Kit that technically can’t run windows 11 What’s peoples plans with older kit? I guess we can use Windows 10 LTSC that goes on until January 2027 if we have a VLSC of some type Install windows 11 anyway I used to run it on my old 7th Gen Workstation in the office. We have in circulation: 11 4th Gen, 40 5th Gen, 40 6th, & 29 7th Gen. Bulk of the 5th and 6th are in the two IT rooms scheduled to be replaced but still in 2 budget cycles i have to find a solution. It’s the 7th that’s annoying as they are still good PCs.

Likewise. If the Windows 11 LTSC version due out this year installs fine on our older machines, I may chance that If not - Switching to Windows 10 21H2 LTSC gives us until 2027. If you hold your nose after that, you can roll back to the 1809 LTSC which gives you until 2029. It's not ideal, but it gives us a bit of wiggle room. Won't have hundreds of these machines left, but it does mean we can balance with other priorities. Edited January 15, 2024 by DrCheese

I've just finished rolling out staff laptops & staff classroom PC's which meet the W11 requirements. Going to either need more budget, or move to LTSC for the time being in those IT rooms. I'm glad to see its not just me that has the old kit! Cheapest option would be going for refurbs, probably about £10,000 per room..
FragglePete Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 I've got a good chunk of machines as well - I've made it clear to the powers that be I'm going to need to update as I would like aim to do the Windows 11 upgrade this summer. We've been getting in new Ryzen 5 Pro 5650 with 16Gb for around £340 a unit recently (with 5 year warranty) which absolutely fly with our Win10 install so hoping the same with Win11 image installed. foofighterjim Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 I've had it in my budget plan for the last 3 years that we have over 150 devices unable to support Windows 11. They're all going to be replaced this year (by my successor, whoever that may be).
jthompson Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 I haven't crunched the numbers fully, or tried in anger with W11 deployment, but there's always ChromeOS Flex! We've quite a few 4th and 6th gen still in service, but we're pretty much at the point now where basic teacher workflows are all able to be done without Windows.
Rob_D Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 By my count we've got 100-ish computers left to upgrade. It's on the strategy plan to replace them (we did 80 or so this year), but with all the talk of budgets being slashed and pupil numbers down next year we might need a plan B.

Can definitely do it cheaper than that for you. 34 PCs at £205 is a shade under £7k. That's for 8th Gen i5, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and (if you buy more than £5k worth in one go) 5 year warranties If you did all 102 PCs in one go you'd get them for £200 which would put the whole cost at £20.4k. 4

ICTDirect_Dave Posted January 17, 2024 Posted January 17, 2024 What machine is that? It's a HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Desktop Mini. We've the G4 SFF for slightly more and the 9th Gen G5 mini for £235. Can also source Dell 7060 Mini and SFF pretty easily too. 1

All the admin staff have them as they save space and couldn't be happier with the performance. When we look replacing some computers in a room next financial year, I'm tempted to use them with replacement monitors/brackets to have AIOs 1
