We're handing out paper results there anyway, and if our network (or rather the link to county) isn't up and running, we will be packing up our server and 1 PC and shipping them down there as well. Worrying about SIMS updates is a headache we can do without at this time!

pete Posted July 17, 2008 Author Posted July 17, 2008 Deputy Head Who Does SIMS (DHWDS) came into the office asking about it this morning, he'd seen the doc from capita* re results days and interpreted it (in his words) as "some of the courses (which we don't offer) might require parts of the upgrade to process results". DHWDS has since determined that we're covered and we don't need the update for our results processing. As I don't actually do much on results days apart from being there in case things go titsup, I don't know what form the processing takes or what it may/may not affect. Optimus Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 I updated Sims the day before A-Levels 2 yrs ago - and knacked everything! Luckily I got through to Capita and they held my hand as we rebuilt the server! I learn't a valuable lesson that day - never do a Sims update in August!

kmount Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 If I've read into it properly, the update is released on the 8th but isn't required until the GCSE Results Day on 21st as there's a patch to be applied for the first one which we've already applied. Could be wrong mind you.

There's an interim patch to handle the 'first' results day for the A Levels. I'll dig out the email we were sent from .ict in the morning which outlines what's going on.

There's usually a message on Supportnet if it's not going to be released on time, but nothing so far today. I like to at least have it downloaded on time so that we can put it on even if the LEA plug the hoover in and cut off our internet access. Also, I noticed a fantastic bit of news on supportnet today: Technical Improvements to the SIMS.net August 2008 Main release In order to improve SIMS.net Client upgrade speeds the SIMS 2008 August Main release will be putting the Handbooks (*.pdf's) once on the central SIMS server rather than on each individual client workstation. This should not require you to change anything, however if you have created your own shortcut to these manuals on a workstation (rather than using the links inside SIMS which will automatically be remapped), you will need to change it to N:\SIMS\Documentation (where N:\ is the network mapping of the SIMS Central Server). Existing SIMS Handbooks will remain in each SIMS Client workstation until the SIMS 2009 March Main release when they will be removed. Between the August 2008 and March 2009 releases further technical improvements to SIMS will be made and I will post a news announcing them before each release. Surely a good move 'cos I've never met anyone non-technical who's ever RTFM for ANY software. On the downside it does get us a little further away from being able to stop mapping a drive for SIMS (S: in our case; N: in the example). IIRC it's only Nova that was holding us up on that front. Presumably they could change to a UNC path at some point or make them load out of DocStorage.

Rung helpdesk and was told there was a problem with it and they were having a meeting that afternoon to discuss what to do. They also said it was needed for results day!! Waiting for a call back to say what their cunning plan is! STOP PRESS: IT NOW IS ON SOLUS. Spoken to helpdesk and they reckon it will be fine to apply. Ah well here goes! But i checked today.. and have decided to back up everything like normal and run the update so will be posting in the other thread if any problems occur. James. 1

According to Capita helpdesk it is needed (Maybe Capita need to sing from the same hymn sheet). I've done mine this morning and it all went smoothly. Tried a few bits and it all seems to work. Fingers crossed for results day! 1
