Koldov Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 ...or use the wrong words for things because they genuinely believe that is what is called (or that it is even a 'real' word)... Just a 'bit of fun', not to 'make fun of'... I don't have any that I'm aware of (although I apparently had some strange words for things as a child), but my OH said to me yesterday that she doesn't like the fact that all the running shoes/trainers come in such 'illuminous' colours... I also have an ex that used to call spaghetti bolognese (or spag bol), 'spag bowl' because she had always had it a bowl and she legitimately thought that is why it was called that (only it's not)... 1

LeMarchand Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 Luckily I don't frequent coffee shops often, in case I order an expresso. Ones that annoy me are: "Should of" when it should be "should have". Plus... 2
DalekSec Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 Being dyslexic i say quite a lot wrong.... But this one's from the missus! Till we met she called a Lightsaber a light-saver 1
jmak Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 Beaten to it, but... Expresso [emoji33][emoji33][emoji33] 1
TechMonkey Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 We had an email today updating on a project and letting us know it is a "working progress". 1
Andrew_C Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 NO ONEfrom Hampshire can say "brewery". It always comes out something like "broory" 1
elsiegee40 Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 American friend who say meer-r instead of mirror 1
Norphy Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 A lot of my American colleagues drop their Ts where you wouldn't necessarily expect them to be dropped, like "Identity" because "Ideniny" or something like that. Not like glottal stops like a lot of English do, like "bo-al of wor-ar" or my favourite "Lu-on" 1
elsiegee40 Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 (edited) A lot of my American colleagues drop their Ts where you wouldn't necessarily expect them to be dropped, like "Identity" because "Ideniny" or something like that. Not like glottal stops like a lot of English do, like "bo-al of wor-ar" or my favourite "Lu-on" Yep. Mr gee40 is a long time supporter of Lu-un Town. He was born in the town. Here in Kent Ls become Ws So Millwall is Miwaw. Pickle becomes pick-uw. My offspring’s slipshod pronunciation does irritate me Edited April 24, 2023 by elsiegee40 1
blueday Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 An ex-colleague of mine always said 'pacific' for 'specific' (I think that's quite a common one). 1
Popular Post Andrew_C Posted April 25, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 25, 2023 Oh gods... Americans on the "joining of wires involving heat and a low temperature melting substance". There is an "L" in it ffs... NOT SODDERING. 5
CHiLL Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Tech related, I've known people to say Toebisha for Toshiba and Imperio for Impero. I guess more dialect related, but I will say "hur" for the words "hair", "her". Similar for "their", etc..."thur". 1
sigma Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Yes I hear Imperio for Impero. A previous Network manager said Levarno instead of Lenovo and my mother aways said alumillium instead of aluminium. I say cl e matis not clem a tis. 1

Why do all of these things sound like spells from Harry Potter? 3
Koldov Posted April 25, 2023 Author Posted April 25, 2023 my mother aways said alumillium instead of aluminium. Well at least she didn't say ALUMINUM like the yanks (although to be fair I think they spell it that way too)... Not to bash them though, bless them (they can't help it)! Don't want to stray too far into pedant territory... but here's one from the ex MIL... IBUPRO-FEN (?) I say IBU-PROFEN. 2
southhamster Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 A fellow student at college was sure that gentlemen wore Wide Fronts not Y-Fronts. 1
AlistairB1983 Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 My OH will not want me sharing this story ... but she doesn't read here, so I think I'm safe We live in Reading where the bus routes all have colours associated with them, as well as numbered e.g. the 13/14 buses are the Orange route, the 17 is the purple route etc. Anyway, sat in the car at some traffic lights one day as a dark red dark red bus drives past us. "Oh look" she exclaims, "the Clarey (claret) bus". Queue me bursting into a fit of giggles, which she definitely wasn't impressed with. Even less so now, when I mention the incident whenever we see another of those coloured buses. 1
JRA Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Being dyslexic i say quite a lot wrong.... But this one's from the missus! Till we met she called a Lightsaber a light-saver On a related note my ex, who also took MUCH persuading to the contrary, insisted the character was named DARK Vader.
LeMarchand Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Until I heard it spoken out loud, I always assumed it was Gal Gado(t) with a silent "t". Even now that I know the "t" isn't silent, I still find myself reverting to my initial mispronunciation. As the chances of me ever meeting her are next to zero, it shouldn't be a problem. The chances of me ever meeting Gal Gadot are next to zero.
GiggleKitteh Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Mispronunciation that was written!! Place selling Camellias but because of the spacing we always read it as Camel Lias. 1
Garacesh Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 My tech says 'pacific' instead of 'specific' and it drives me bonkers, if that counts? 1
JRA Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 If writing things counts I'm reminded of a time the school canteen were serving chicken cacciatore. The menu said "chicken cacatory" which... isn't that.
