Big plus for the 1930's instant on's here. Run them as edge switches 48 port and POE 24 ports. All managed by an Aruba 5406Rzl2 core. The 1930 24 POE swiches are currently running our Ruckus R750 AP's and PoE phones with no issues at all, 2 of them are full of POE devices and have been solid since summer 21. Just about to replace our last remaining 1910 and 1920 edge switches for 4 more 1930s next few months.

Sounds an exact copy of what we are running though replace the R750 with the R510 wave2.

I've just had a Netgear GSM7248 die on me so I replaced it with a USW-48-POE.

Just love them and as a lone wolf they just do what I want.... even sorted out a coupe of mislabelled data points as the GUI told me what's plugged in.

I've got 45 Ubiquiti stuff now.. just need the budget to replace the rest of the Netgear switches.

Annoyingly the Netgear have lifetime warranties so I should be able to replace the 7248 and just sell the replacement.. but its 15 years old an I haven't got a copy of the invoice.

I'm going to be all about the switches this summer...

8 Netgear swapped for Aruba at one school (they already have 2 Aruba switches so it's just matchy-matchy) Replacing 3 sets of 4x1Gb with 2 sets of 2x10Gb and 1 set of 4x10Gb at another - which is just a change of SFP & tails from my point of view as the contractor is doing the rest.

but...

24 Unifi switches, 10Gb backbone, Cloudkey, LSZHCat6 from ancient Cat5 throughout most of the building at another.

This one is going to be a b*llache as the has Head basically signed me up to be the cabler's skivvy for 4 weeks to get the price down! Which gets even more entertaining when we factor in that the MAT appointed contractor, procured independently, I had nothing to do with the selection process... Is my brother in law!

I'm upgrading my current fleet of HP Procurve switches to Unifi - supply of the devices is a lot better now, but only PoE versions.

Gen2 stuff is better than the previous especially PSU issues - but, I've managed to find a guy that repairs the PSU of these devices - just had a couple of US-8-150W repaired and returned - cost £95 per device.

Always had Aruba or HP Procurve, but recent supply issues (40+ week lead time for a new CX6100) has forced me to look elsewhere. Management is a breeze once you have your network and profiles setup - I'm running it on a Gen2 Cloud Key.

Would still keep my core as a HP/Aruba device though - our 5406zl just plods along quite happily.

Make sure youve enabled cloud backups, makes replacing a dead cloudkey/not having to reset everything a breeze!

Can you share the details of the repairer please - we've got loads of these and we've only ever had 1 with a dead PSU and it died with in 2 weeks of install so was a simple supplier replace job, but I know it's only a matter of time given how many we have (we've plenty of cold spares so waiting for a repair etc isn't an issue as it would then come back into stock as a cold spare).

If I could make Unifi Network work through RM/SWGfL then I would. All the change requests, e-mails back and forth with RM could never get the Unifi stuff to work. Their stuff doesn't like Double NAT-ing which is essentially how RM/SWGfL works. If someone has got it working, then let me know!

Sure, his details as follows:

Frank Quattromini

Avanti Power Repairs Ltd

Give him a call, he'll talk for hours though and certainly knows his stuff. Turned round our repair in about three days.

+1 for this guy. He was the only guy who'd touch the high power switchmode power supplies in QSC and PowerSoft amps back when I was doing audio engineering. He's also good with the flaky Epson UST power supplies.

Fairly cheep, fairly cheerful, averagely reliable, with average features, poor warranty, and reasonably poor support.

I run one at home, I wouldnt run them in school.

They are not enterprise switches, so if looking to replace a 5412ZL or some other high end etc then theres no comparison.

They're not going to replace a core switch, but for edge switching for most schools they're perfectly adequate and they're so cheap you can have plenty of cold spares - of course if they don't have the functionality you need then you can't consider them but if they do then I'd definitely recommend them - we run them across all of our schools for edge switching and WiFi. We have the smaller brother of the 5412 at the core of many of our schools - the 5406R zl2.

Fair point - and true about being cheap enough to load up on spares. I had about 10% of the fleet die in 3 years so that was the end of that as I don't want to be spending all day swapping switches out no matter how cheap they are.

Sadly now the LEA have forcibly installed Aruba switches they are no more reliable than the Unifi.

*thinks of the old HP Procurve switches which had only one die in 15 years and sobs into his cuppa coffee*

Remember - Unifi switches don't meet the standard requirements that the DFE has listed for schools to have

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/meeting-digital-and-technology-standards-in-schools-and-colleges/switch-standards-for-schools-and-colleges

(I both love and hate this document - I love that it gives us clout to say "We need X, the DFE tell us to have X" but I hate that the requirements are so overkill that I can't afford it!!)

I have any number of issues with the document - I know exactly what you mean, I raised it with the DfE at a lunch at BETT where one of the contributors from United Learning was present, I'm not sure he liked my comments!

Yup. I'm looking at around £4.5/5k to replace each of my 27 switches if I stick to DFE spec - I feel like I'm forced to tho, as equally my governing body can easily go "Why aren't you following the DFE?"

It's really designed for their "Connect the classroom" projects - Which is fine, but we're aren't all getting that money!!!

Even their CTC projects allow for derrogations if you have a good reason...

Aye, but I don't think they'd then allow you to put in Unifi switches...

Yup - Which goes into the political terrority about schools & funding...

We can do anything people want - Long as they fund it. Asking schools to delivery a modern IT experience on a shoestring is difficult.

each?

Have you seen the enterprise TL-SG-3452X and TL-SG3428XMP ? They are under £500 ea and unbeaten for features/price

Yes, each - The DFE recommended specs can only be met by the high-end Aurba/Meraki models. They require you to ensure your wireless points are cabled into multigb ports. You can have non multigb units in the stack for your other uses, as unless you have separate fibre to every switch you'll need to stack with the same model range.

For Aruba, you're looking at the 6300 series if you need any stacking, as they insist on 40gb Interconnections. The 6200 series can't do this, as it would eat up all of your SPF+ ports.

The 6100 series can't do stacking at all.

Aye depending on your layout of the school it'd probably be cheaper to use 2930Ms currently as they're not EOL yet.

We're doing a new secondary build atm and as part of the DfE framework they're using 2930Ms (in terms of the multi-gig either a full SmartRate for a large AP area or with a single 1-slot multi-gig module for smaller areas), but on average they're coming out about £3k each by the time you add in stacking modules/PSU etc

Or a few chassis, but again would depend on your layout in terms of how those cabs fall

The irony being it's probably cheaper to re-route the AP cabling to a few cabs and only have multigig there than trying to cover them all :p
