broc Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I am having a clampdown on e-messenger access at school and came across this while trawling the www : http://www.splatt.com.au/blog/archives/2004/08/msn_web_messeng.html It seems to be full of students complaining about how good a job we are doing in schools blocking e-messenger, but more importantly they go on to list the sites they are using and the techniques they have been using to try and get round our efforts to block them. Has anyone else come across any other similar sites? broc
indiegirl Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 That's one helluva find (she says, blocking those listed sites as she types :-D) If I can think of any more, I'll share, but this looks a fairly comprehensive list...
CheeseDog Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Just about to filter the defilter site mentioned in that link.
witch Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I can't access the site coz it is already blocked! (SWGfL)
pete Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Added to the list as well. BTW - has anyone seen a php chat script accessed from their network? It looks pretty generic and doesn't use a database (that I can see), quite a few kids have tried hosting it on their ISP's homepages (well, until we block the domain  ).
webman Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 block Meeb.com, too if it's not on the list (started reading it, then realised how tiny the scroll bar was... )
RobC Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Jesus, the spambots must be having a field day on splaTT's site! Oh well, off to do some blocking...
Mitch Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Hi We have noticed a huge increase in e-messenger, so far our database is over 150+ addresses that we know of and still finding them Mitch
ChrisH Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 You need to be blocking keywords and phrases. Your never going to keep on top of a URL list even with a subscription to a list.
Rozzer Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 Also cannot access that website Ah well i block anything with the word messenger in it Ross
Andrew_C Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I see that there are a few posts down the bottom from "adults" and SysAdmins. How many are from here?
ChrisH Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 I’m 17 and can hack anything. I nearly fell off my chair laughing at that statement
ICTNUT Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 What a superb find ! Top marks for broc, come and sit at the front of the class ;-)
RobC Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 But really... It's a sad state of affairs when kids proclaim that they'd rather kill themselves than be without access to messenger (as at least two of the posters did)! Get. A. F***ing. Life.
kingswood Posted March 15, 2006 Posted March 15, 2006 We stopped e-messenger sites by blocking their IP range. The students thought they were being intelligent by prefacing the URL with the name of a city, but IIRC e-messenger relies on only a handful of IP addresses to resolve these... Even so- that's a fantastic find and I will be using that tomorrow. Chat is THE biggest problem on our LAN by far. I love making their life tougher (read: promoting a lesson in which they actually do some work) rather than leaving them to enjoy a few chat sessions with their mates. Then again, it's hard for me. I have an IT Technician who thinks he's a hacker! lol! :-)
TechMonkey Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 Not sure if anyone else has come across this site but another site of sites for both proxies and AIM. http://therealnet.cafe150.com/. Most are banned all ready as they contain proxy or messenger in teh url but there are some gems there.
petectid Posted April 19, 2006 Posted April 19, 2006 We have started to use White Lists which the staff can control, no more surfing outside the set list.
