e-messenger sites, and where do students go to find them?

I am having a clampdown on e-messenger access at school and came across this while trawling the www :

It seems to be full of students complaining about how good a job we are doing in schools blocking e-messenger, but more importantly they go on to list the sites they are using and the techniques they have been using to try and get round our efforts to block them.

 

Has anyone else come across any other similar sites?

BTW - has anyone seen a php chat script accessed from their network? It looks pretty generic and doesn't use a database (that I can see), quite a few kids have tried hosting it on their ISP's homepages (well, until we block the domain :twisted: ).

We have noticed a huge increase in e-messenger, so far our database is over 150+ addresses that we know of and still finding them

You need to be blocking keywords and phrases. Your never going to keep on top of a URL list even with a subscription to a list.

But really... It's a sad state of affairs when kids proclaim that they'd rather kill themselves than be without access to messenger (as at least two of the posters did)! Get. A. F***ing. Life.

We stopped e-messenger sites by blocking their IP range. The students thought they were being intelligent by prefacing the URL with the name of a city, but IIRC e-messenger relies on only a handful of IP addresses to resolve these...

 

Even so- that's a fantastic find and I will be using that tomorrow. Chat is THE biggest problem on our LAN by far. I love making their life tougher (read: promoting a lesson in which they actually do some work) rather than leaving them to enjoy a few chat sessions with their mates.

 

Then again, it's hard for me. I have an IT Technician who thinks he's a hacker! lol!

Not sure if anyone else has come across this site but another site of sites for both proxies and AIM. http://therealnet.cafe150.com/.

Most are banned all ready as they contain proxy or messenger in teh url but there are some gems there.

We have started to use White Lists which the staff can control, no more surfing outside the set list.
