Simple question...

What backup solution do you use on your servers?

Single domain controller and/or a SIMS SQL server.

We are currently using Redstor to backup approx. 50 schools / servers and looking to make savings.

I wouldnt skimp on backup personally. It's one of the most important things we do even though it's so hidden hardly anyone notices it!!

Good backup solutions may seem expensive when everything is running, but when you have to make use of them *cough ransomware* that cost will seem tiny.

We use it across our schools... So much easier to use than our previous software, which took 2 days to restore a server from a backup (spent most of its time indexing the drives...)

 

Veeam is also very good at the single file restore when a student 'loses' a vital coursework document...!

Veeam for server Cluster VMs (Free edition), Windows Backup for Local VM's & File (Apps only) Server (Also covered by Veeam) and Synology Active Backup for Office 365. I've always thought that multiple backups in multiple programs is a safeguard against that one bit of software making a pigs ear of it, either on backup or restore.

Veeam cloud connect licensed version from a cloud storage provider like ct.co.uk for example is probably the most cost effective way of using veeam rather than purchasing off veeam direct as theres a requirement to have cloud backups nowadays and you'll just end up paying twice. You'll need an outgoing fwall rule on port 6180 for it to whatever cloud provider you end up choosing.

If you are really stuck for cash then something like vsquare is fairly cheap and can manage free versions of vmware too.

Urbackup is nice for local file level backup, perhaps extra redundancy on some old servers you might have, its free open source, has a linux+windows agent for it and is very quick and easy to config. It also does full image backups.

Add another Veeam member to the pile.

 

Then we use Backblaze B2 Cloud alongside Veeam to take cloud copies. However I'm still doing weekly backups to tape as well until the day our autoloader bites the bullet.

Altaro. price point is good. Very simple to use.

Veeam for backup, and also Veeam to make a copy of the backup to a physically separate building, and finally QNAP backup to make a offline copy onto portable USB drive.

I never used their physical server backup solution, but Altaro's VM Backup is excellent - as is the support!

Every school in the Trust has a 10 TB NAS for onsite back ups via windows back up, one school has a 100TB NAS for all other schools offsite back ups via windows back up and one has a 40TB nas for the offsite back up of the school with the 100TB back up, had some scripts made by a friend that outputs to a PHP site we can check the outcome of all the various backups in one central place. Cost - just the hardware.
