Hello... Hope you are all well.

 

Kinda out of my depth here.

 

We have fibre going into cabs and then a media converter.

I want to put this into a cisco switch on either end. I ordered 2 SFP modules and the fibre end bits are too big to go into the module.

Switch = Cisco SG500

The media convertors are SC but the SFP is LC. Are you using patch cables. Also the media convertor looks like short range and the sfps look like long range. What fibre cabling have you got in place, do you use patch cables from a fibre patch panel or is it a fibre straight through? Edited by Davit2005

Your first step will be to identify what type of fibre has been installed and and how it has been terminated. It will probably be OM3 or OM4 multi-mode and usually terminated onto a patch panel (The SFP module you have purchased is for Single Mode fibre SMF). The next step is to identify what type of connector is installed into the patch panel. This will usually either be LC or SC type connectors. Then you can purchase the correct fibre patch cable to connect directly from the panel to your SFP module. Edited by djm968

You won't get a SFP with SC connection, I've never seen one anyway not to fit a modern switch. Some very old Cisco switches used to have SC connectors but as you can see they are at least double the width of the smaller more modern LC connector.

 

Have a look through the thread and check what others have said. Ideally you want it all to match. The mode at both ends need to match i.e MultiMode (Short Range) or Single mode (Long Range) . You also want to use similar/same cable i.e. 9/125 (OS) , 50/125 (OM2,3,4,5) or 62.5/125 (OM1 but that is old standard) .

You can get SC to LC patch cables or use a adapter but I recommend a patch cable with correct connections on each end.

If you have SC (large square) on the patch panel, and LC (little square) on the SFP, then you need an LC to SC patch cable:

You should check the cable on the back of the panel for the fibre diameter (OM1 - OM4). If it doesn't say, its probably OM1.
