Excessive login time

Sorry wasn't sure exactly which section to post this in.

 

We've been having an issue with one of our classroom computers taking about 15 minutes to login. Doesn't seem to matter who the user is whether it's student, teacher or admin. All other computers in the block are fine.

I tried re-imaging and using the spare whiteboard PC in it's place for around a week or two. There are only 2 easily accessible network points near the desk and both points are as bad as each other.

 

I can't remember how it behaved when we brought it back to the office as that was a few months ago, but when I swap it out to do some further testing I will report back.

You could Enable verbose status messages on login and see if getting stuck on a group policy.

Sounds like some sort of group policy not being able to complete. I'm sure Group Policy times out after 15 mins if it can't apply.

 

Run a gpresult on the affected machine to find out what GPOs are assigned to it and see if any are denied.

Have you tried the problematic computer in another, known working location (e.g. other classroom / network port)? Or vice versa, a good working computer in the classroom with the issue?

 

With you mentioning that both ports were the same (poor performance), perhaps they are faulty, or at a pair is not terminated correctly and only working at 100mbps, instead of 1000mbps (assuming you've got 1Gbps switches).

Check event logs on effected PC too.

I'd want to swap it over with a known good machine and see if the problem network point and/or switch port is a determining factor.

Can you log on locally to check the link speed? We had a similar issue where the connection was only 10MB rather than 1GB due to modules in the face plate being damaged but not obviously so
