(using fast.com) Any way even on my fastest laptop sitting under an access point connected at 866/866 (according to properties) I can get at best 350mbit to the web. When I move a file from a workstation this seems to check out as it'll transfer at about 35MB/ sec. (usually 220mbit on fast.com) is this normal for wifi overheads etc? Using Unifi HD NANO. (firmware up to date)

We have Sophos XG and we get the full 1Gbit through. The issue is that Wifi bandwidth is shared, like old network hubs (pre-switches). Only way you'd get all of the bandwidth is if no-one else was connected to it.

WiFi tech atm is only around the 300Mbps range Context: One of our internet connections is gig sym, I have a mix of Unifi APs that are connected on gig or 2 gig copper back to a switch, all of our switches have 2 or 4gig fibre back to the core. The router is 10gig capable but running a 1gig SFP directly off the core. On a workstation connected close to the core I can pull full gig - maximum of 1026mbps assuming nobody is using it. Moving away from the core internet speed drops off to around 800-900mbps at the furthest reaches of our site on a wired connection. On a laptop with a DLink Wireless6 adapter in it, connected to a wireless N access point (due to be replaced at christmas) I can pull 80-90mb with nobody else connected. Average in use is about 30mbps but can drop as low as 10mb with 30+ devices. The same laptop connected to an AC access point sees an ocasional maximum of around 350mbps with nobody else connected and average 90-150mbps, dropping to around 30-50 as the station aproaches maximum devices. We only have 1 wireless 6 access point and one wireless 6 capable laptop so I can't test it to saturation, but I can pull 800mbps off that reliably.
psydii Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 I sit next to an 802.11ac wave 1 AP. I get 600-900 Mbit/sec when nobody else is in the building. Once we get to about 10 clients 300 Mbit/sec is the theoretical best throughput. Once we get to 30-40 you are looking at sub 10Mbit/sec. (it comes from a 2020 research paper in to increasing throughput using some novel techniques, which is what the solid lines are showing). It all depends on the usage of your wifi. We have a professionally designed WLAN, and we have zero problems with a class-full throwing around Photoshop files and Premier projects. But we also make sure teachers know to spread the load - and they are encouraged to stagger any big uploads/downloads. They structure their lessons accordingly. It works extremely well, and it works (less well) when they forget. Would 1Gb/sec wired desktops be better? Yes, but then the room would not be multipurpose and so these courses could not run at all.
