Big Lottery Wins

£180m+ could be won today.

 

Mme LeMarchand and I were wondering what we'd spend that sort of money on. We added a bit to our "getting by OK" wages to bump them to "doing nicely" and multiplied by expected lifespan. Allowed 1m for nice house and other treats and rounded up. Allowed 1m between 2 Bonus Daughters and another between friends and family. It fell far short of 180m!

 

I've often wondered how some of these Just Giving/Go Fund Me people get such good responses (not that some of them don't deserve it); maybe people who have big lottery wins fill their time by browsing such sites and giving as a hobby? Mme LeMarchand has much more faith in human nature than me and thinks big winners end up devoting a lot of time and their winnings to charitable causes.

 

What do the rest of you think? What would you spend it on?

This ongoing Euromillions jackpot has been the talk of the last couple of weeks in the office here! I'd split the money with my immediate family, I'd get a modest house (nothing massive) and maybe a new car, I'm pretty sure I'd divide a chunk of it up for a number of charities and I'd also want to invest some money in renewable energy and green technology. Most importantly, I'd hand in my notice and then use the money to fund things I actually want to do, though!

I'd probably stay on in work and get documentation etc in place and stuff tidied up before handing my notice in - just so people don't put 2 + 2 together!

The 84 million I'd split between family and friends plus donate to my Scout Group and causes locally. As much as the big charities are worthy, smaller charities often need money/items more.

 

The 100 million I'd buy a house, cars and travel.

 

I'd probably employ some staff to do various jobs in the house too.

 

I'd also carry on working for 6 months or so just to let it all sink in.

 

I'd be able to do a lot of things that I'd like to do.

I think I'd probably jack in work too now, time is too valuable to spend it earning money I wouldn't need even if the job is rewarding.

 

I'd build a leisure complex in our town. That'd eat...quite a lot of it.

 

There'd be enough left for a VW Up.

Me, Wouldn't rush anything, would rather get work sorted so as not to leave my team in the lurch. Set up some trusts for Son and Nephew. Sort my Sister and Parents our for houses and cars. Sort some people close to me for a good chunk of change. But a large chunk into investments, just in case. I'd like a sail boat, and to learn to sail. Then take my time enjoying myself for a bit.

 

Then as you say, help out some charities randomly. Get my old Scout group a new hut and some decent kit. Do some random drops of cash to help.

At that sort of scale you'd be earning several million a year in interest, at which point your job becomes "chair of charitable foundation" and you spend time checking up on what the people receiving your funds are doing. Some of the parents here are probably in a similar situation, either through money they've made directly or through family fourtunes inherited through several generations. Everything is relative, of course - houses locally cost up to £55,000,000, and your cost-of-living might have to factor in things like minders or a security detail for your children.

After buying a house, new car, and a few million quid in the bank to live off, I'd give the majority of it away.

 

Immediate family, friends and colleagues (well, they would be ex-colleagues as soon as the money hit my bank account!) would get some. Lots of charitable donations. Like the idea of donating to random Justgiving pages.

 

I'd also look at buying some land and building an astro pitch for the touch rugby club. Facilities would then be rented out to other local teams, only at a level so it was breaking even.

I think when you're dealing with that sort of amount, the idea is not so much how to spend it but how best to invest and grow it even more. It's far more valuable kept as capital. Invest it and live off the interest and/or dividends that it'll be generating. Try to grow the pot whilst you're also feeding whatever charitable purposes you want to support long term.

God knows what I'd do with that amount of money. I'm not even sure my brain can rationalise it. It just files it under "functionally unlimited money". I mean I'm sure it's quite possible to spend it all, but there's nothing that I want that would run me in any danger of tightening my belt.

 

Probably a house. A better (non-crashed!) motorbike. Pay off any debt my mum might have (tho I think she debt- and mortgage-free now..), er.. Maybe a wardrobe refresh? And now I'm out of ideas. I'm a simple man.
