Hi all

We have got our first Laptop Trolley.

I'm writing some rules to place on top of it. Any handy pointers from anyone? I've got the usual chargers must be plugged in when in the Trolley etc

Thanks!

Here we added the trolleys to the Room Booking System, also have Lesson allocation sheets for teachers so that students are assigned a particular laptop each time they have one from that trolley so that we can keep them as safe as possible. We started with having departmental trolleys with the emphasis on the departments to look after them with us doing checks. We also numbered them and the cables and made it as easy as possible to charge them and notice when one hasn't been returned the trolley for charging.

Our these directed at staff or students?

We're a secondary so the rules were for the students.

The big ones for us were:

Report any damage to the teacher straight away.

Don't pull the bloody keycaps off.

Make sure you're logged off (and ideally shut down) before putting it in the trolley - don't just close the lid.

Don't remove chargers from trolley (although it keeps happening anyway).

Also, wound up with a little graphic for which way around the laptop should go. Because apparently it would never occur to teenage students to just orient the laptop so the power plug was close to the power lead rather than trying to pull the power lead over to wherever the connector wound up.

Picture/s showing which port the charger should be plugged into?

OTH, chances are whatever you put there will be ignored :(.

Yeah I'm fully prepared for it to be an ignored piece of paper haha

As others have said it's great to put rules in place but for whatever reason staff and students choose to ignore them.

We colour coded our laptops and trolleys in the hope the laptops would be returned to the correct trolleys, wishful thinking as it never happens. We also put rules in place that the teachers would check the devices as they are being removed/put back into the trolleys and if any damage was reported the department responsible would be charged for the damage, again wishful thinking as I've just has to replace the keyboards on 100 laptops at a cost of £45 per keyboard out of the ICT budget.

Take pictures of how it should look as a whole. And emphasise that when a laptop is returned it needs to be plugged in. Will the students come to the trolley or the trolley go to the students. State replacement chargers are £££ (try and get an accurate amount. You don't want to put barriers to entry/ usage, but at the same time you want as many to enjoy the benefits of a mobile learning solution.

We're about to set up a new laptop trolley full of Chrome books. I love the coloured idea - thank you.

Totally agree though - any attempt on rules will be completely pointless... matching colours might have more success lol

How are you folks dealing with cleaning them down? each student has to wipe down their laptop after use here but some of them get drowned in antibac its going to nail a laptop soon I am pretty sure.

Good Luck - mobile devices are a management headache here - we check them every holiday for chargers missing, not in the right slots, not up the right way, devices missing, keys missing off the keyboard.

we've tried signing in and out systems, getting them to turn the trolleys off and on, if on timers, they remove them, and all sorts.

Its a shame they don't look after them as its us that then get complained at when they don't work properly!

You could do what my old boss did with ICT suites. The last teacher to use the room before the damage was discovered gets repairs cross-charged to their department. They soon got very good at checking everything at the start of the lesson.
