Badaz52 Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Simple query really, Teams chat do you allow it or not? our students misuse it constantly and to be honest I think teachers have become lazy because even though we are back now full-time students are working from Teams in almost every lesson so are using teams chat to talk to others in different classes because they are naturally not allowed mobile phones out so can't text etc. For me, I can see why teachers want the chat function enabled - because it is convenient for them but surely communication should take place in the team's channel in a more public forum just like it would in class or through emails if students want to speak to staff privately. Teams chat for me is just too easy for them to mess around. What do you do?
3s-gtech Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 It’s enabled here. I disabled it because it was getting thoroughly abused, but then realised that the teachers were using it to talk to pupils (I thought they were only doing this in the classroom Teams). It’s now back on, and disabled for individuals who abuse it.

For those that abuse it though do you find yourself enabling it then disabling it again and just rinse and repeat until the ends of time? lol
3s-gtech Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 No. It's one chance and then gone. They tend to be the 'less able' students (they choose to use a school system to bully, swear at or abuse someonone else!) and they haven't been engaging on Teams as much anyway.
mavhc Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 Currently it's hard to monitor pupil<>pupil chat, so it's off for pupils, but that's changing soon when they add monitoring

networkmangler Posted March 30, 2021 Posted March 30, 2021 When are they adding that? I assume it will only be for the paid sub levels? At the moment it's due in April: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=&searchterms=81359 It will mean students will only be able to use the chat if a member of staff is part of it "Use Teams administrative policy to ensure students are supervised by an educator during private 1:1 or group chats. With Supervised Chat, students will not be allowed to engage in chats without a supervising educator present." 2

Sylv3r Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 We have chat enabled here but monitor it via the SENSO Teams monitoring tool at £1 per user - it works really well, students know that key words are logged so most chats are on task, students helping each other with homework etc. There's the occasional random message sent - but we can put up with that !
mavhc Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 They just use the class Team channel here, if they were doing group work we'd make private channels
Boredguy Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 We disabled 1:1 chat for students when first setting up Teams 18 months ago, and the "General" channel in most of the subject teams is set to Owner to post only, so students can only reply to the message. Only other time they can use the chat function is within a meeting if they have not been muted.
chazzy2501 Posted March 31, 2021 Posted March 31, 2021 (edited) disabled chat for pupils, told them to use the chat within their team groups or (and here is an idea) use Email. For some looked after pupils, I have their TA make an exclusive team group. Edited March 31, 2021 by chazzy2501

(Pupil to Pupil) Can they carry on posting in these?
psydii Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 "Note Supervised chat protects new chats created after the feature is enforced. It doesn't protect existing chats." https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftteams/supervise-chats-edu 1
