Trapper Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Hi, I was wondering if anyone in the Birmingham area knows of any companies who can safely, and reliably dispose of old IT kit - printers, scanners, CRT monitors, assorted odds and ends. Preferably for free, or a very small fee! Cheers

dgsmith Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 As strawberry mentioned, Lancs Computer Waste Services have recently collected alot of our old equipment at no charge, and they even give you a certificate which, depending upon how proud you are of recycling, you can frame! They didn't seem too picky as to what we had and were decent enough chaps!

sjatkn Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 I have used Excel Data Systems (Excel Datasystems). They were generally very good, just a little slow providing the disposal certificate. They would charge me a fee for the collection but for each base unit or monitor, etc I sent them they would give back £1-2. If you sent them enough stuff you could even come out in profit. You would need to contact them for the cost of a trip to Birmingham and for their current 'price' list.

First time went without a hitch..... second time, they had trouble with their van, so could only take half. They came back, asap, to pick up all the rest, and it was all done for free. Can't argue with that! *EDIT* They are in Staffs, so should be an easy job for them!

JoeBloggs Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 (edited) KMD offer a free service, but there is a minimum amount of equipment for free. They are generally quick on collecting your items. I've used PRM before but it took several weeks before the van was in my area, and the second time I tried to book them they returned my call a month later, so KMD had already took my items. I have a mail folder full of groups offereing to recycle for free including one called computer-recycle who are offering vouchers but I have never used them

winadmin Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 We have disposed of a lot of kit over the years, seems like loads more companies have started recently. Lots of companies try and tap us up for our equipment, offering free collections, the service is usually terrible and we werent confident that the equipment wasnt being exported. We last used Pure Planet Recycling and I was very impressed with their service, a small charge was levied for the collection, but we did fill a van load, including broken crt monitors, so i thought they were fairly priced. They crushed my hard drives in front of me and certified the process so i was more than pleased.

laptopsandspares Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I discovered WEEE approved computer recycling for Kent, Hamphire, Surrey and Sussex. yesterday. Had a chat with Paul Hodge there, very helpful (particularly as I was trying to sell to him) They mention (as we used to in the old days), they might even be able to return some value on what they collect to you. This will of course depend on the spec and condition of the kit you are releasing. I have an e.mail address for him (I won't post it on here), but if you have a list of what needs shifting I'll hapily forward it on for you. It might even score me some brownie points (I'm so shallow) With metal prices currently, I can't think you'd need to talk to anyone who needed to charge you for collection. Those in the trade I used to compete against when we did this could be seen to be rubbing their hands together when someone asked "how much" it would be to dispose of their old product. The only charges I can think you might need to bear may be the cost of data wiping the hard drives if this is required. Hope this helps David
