Hey Everyone

Our management team has asked me to put some 365 backup in place in the case someone deletes a file and we go over the 30 days. I have been looking at Veeam 365 backup and i am testing this out but i have noticed the speed is not great maybe due to our own internal network. is anyone else using veeam 365 backup to onpremis ?

Anyone else using other solutions.

We're looking at this as part of our strategy going forwards, and the main few people seem to mention between here/reddit is Veeam/Barracuda/Synology NAS's (built in software to do it)

Regarding speed, you have to remember how much there is to download for every mailbox/team etc, as Veeam said they didn't do incremental etc as it's a full download each time last time I asked

Office has a pretty good internal backup for files etc - but as an extra layer to cover all the sharepoint sites etc we brought in Backupify by a company called Datto. Not a huge amount of money and worked out alot cheaper than Veeam and Barracuda when we looked at it (about a year ago now)

An alternative would be to look at creating a retention policy in 365.

This is what we do, the only issue is when a user runs out of space (all 1TB of it), they're unable to delete anything.

Using Barracuda here.

Had it for a year now. Easy to setup.

Licensed by number of staff, then all students are included.

Edit

Also apparently no storage limit. We have about 6tb in our Office 365 environment.

Out of curiosity how much do you pay? (and from who if you have a decent supplier? :p)

We paid £3100 for 250 staff which then gave us all the students included.

I use CAE for the purchase. They do do a 14 day trial

That's great, appreciated :) Will have a look at them

We also use this and can recommend it.

In relation to Office (Microsoft) 365 the options in relation to protecting your data appears to be:

Nothing

Just rely on Microsoft for their numerous data centres, 2-stage recycle bin, retention labels & rules

Backup to Cloud

Redstor - We currently use Redstor for local to cloud. Though do dread to think of the cost of backing up everything; especially based on on current costs to backup 3TB of local data! (that's just 3 staff OneDrive areas, potentially!)

Veeam - others have stated that this too, is expensive @supportman

Barracuda - this has been mentioned as being quite competitive, only pay for staff accounts only? @aleach2 @Mr.Ben @ozydave

Backupify - £5 a month? @Edu-IT

others...

Backup Local (gone full circle! moved to cloud to reduce on-site services...)

QNAP - which models? Any limitations of what this can / cannot backup or restore?

Synology - which models? Any limitations of what this can / cannot backup or restore? @gcarr

Some have stated that they just (pay for and) backup their staff accounts (and teams / SharePoint sites) only? and not bother with the Students' OneDrive? If that is the case, what about student's (course) work that may have to be retained / backed up? Or is that overcome by ensuring that the students work has been uploaded to their Class-based Team / department Team (SharePoint site)?

Just weighing up all the options 'before' more of our data is migrated into the Office 365 environment. Therefore would appreciate feedback from other schools who have done similar, or are in the process of migrating.

Thanks,

Just using the retention policies here, no onsite or offsite backup for the data in Office365. We now have all shared areas in Office 365 plus a lot of personal areas. The plan is to migrate any remaining local personal storage later this year.

One question I would have, is who do these backup companies use for data center storage? Do they have there own full data center? I'd guess not and they'll pay others. So really your just protecting Microsoft going bust or deleting your accounts, blocking access etc.

No backup is full proof, so you have to weight up the risks decide as a school. For us, we've put effort in to data protection, central Office 365 storage (If you can't find a document, then it's gone, backup or no backup) which we believe is worth more than paying for another backup service. I have nothing against others who have gone with a separate backup, if you can justify the cost, do it.

So i have decided to go for Synology DS1821 with the built in backup for o365 this offer unlimited and we are going for around 10TB of space on this. it seem a basic solution for an extra layer of safety.

Hi @Uber22

Just interested in why / how you decided upon that specific model to use? As going through same assessment process. Had Synology recommended that one based on your amount of users / data etc? As I suspect the more data / users / backup jobs the higher the specification (of CPU / Memory) of NAS required.

Thanks,

funnily enough ive just posted this on another thread:

I use the QNAP backup- boxafe. It is a little rough around the edges but it works. Initial sync was slow and the scheduling is non existent (you backup nightly at 12AM, thats it). However, it does work and does restore. It will backup sharepoint (and teams since it pulls the teams through sharepoint). You can backup onedrive and office365 mail. Its free so im doing that until I get a better option - plus the QNAP nas was sitting doing nothing (since it was one of the OLD backup stores when we had libraries onsite!)

QNAP is a 1273-rp populated with ironwolf pros. It uses a pair of domestic SSDs as write cache. It used to be an iscsi target but is pretty much just standalone office365 backup now. This particular box also worked as a stretch cluster "other side" at one point in its life and performed that duty very well (we were migrating one of our SANs at the time, then we restructured).
