Headphones for home

Hi all

 

I have a problem - the headphones I use to watch interesting stuff while Mrs mikeprice is watching CNN or Coronation Street (etc) are getting a bit past it

I have resurrected them using about a gallon of superglue but I expect that to only last a short while - especially if the grand-kids come round and find them!!

 

Anyway - I need some new ones

Noise cancelling ones would be good - but I'm not prepared to spend loads of money on them and I'm not sure cheaper ones (is £50 reasonable???) actually work judging by reviews on sites

 

and - clearly - I need to get something online - or clikc and collect - so I have limited options to look around and make a judgement

 

SO - I thought I would ask you lot

 

Anyone got any recommendations or 'avoid at all costs' stories???

According to Amazon I purchased them on 3rd of January 2017, so they've lasted the last 4 years of use pretty well - the battery still holds a couple of days worth of charge, the headband is looking a little worn. The noise cancelling is pretty good, at least muffling most external sounds, and you can use them as a microphone for calls. They have a 3.5mm input so you can use them as corded headphones, too.

I bought a pair of these Sony's a while back, pretty good and in your budget. However for home use I'm a Sennheiser HD25 man, if they were good enough for Concorde they're good enough for me!

For a tenner, they're pretty decent. You can use then Bluetooth, wired, with a micro sd or built in FM and they have a built in mike. Only tried the first 2 functions, though. Battery life is pretty good. Not noise-cancelling, though. I mainly use them solo in my office so I don't have to scramble when I eventually realise that a track isn't suitable for school and to listen to the odd thing on YouTube.

 

Only downsides for me are they feel a little tight, but this applies to most headphones (must be my enlarged brain ), and that you can't charge and listen wirelessly.

One review I read said that when the reviewer tried the Sony WH-1000XM3s on in a crowded, noisy exhibition hall he thought there'd been a power cut, the noise cancelling was that good!

Weirdly the first time I tried them on my eyes started to water. Its like the absence of sound made my eyes panic.

I will throw a curve ball. Disclaimer - I'm not an Apple fan, really don't like the brand. Oldish apple wired headphones with jack. No noise cancelation, no wireless but they are cheap and produce good sound for the price. Bough pair for the wife and she ditched her more expensive bluetooth headphone for these. You can find on ebay plenty of them , just don't buy the cheapest ones, as they are fake. £10 and slightly above are good ones.

I don't get on with Earpods, I can never get them to stay in my ears. And other cheap ear buds these days all seem to come with those god-awful silicone tips which I also don't get on with. I've seen those Sony headphones above for about £200 on the intarwebs, it's tempting...

This. I have ravaged countless "gaming headsets" and cheaper sets of cans over the years. My biggest issue being that I tend to get wires snagged and break them, which is more my fault over the product, so I needed something wireless and/or detachable 3.5mm, which the Sony's have on both fronts.

 

Outstanding sound quality and the noise cancelling is next to none. Battery life very good, too.

I agree with the Sony ones. I got myself a longer cable after I vacumed up the original and it's been tones better.

I'm a headphone hoarder, and have pairs all over the place. The best value, and ones I use for entertainment (rather than mixing etc) are cheap but great! oneodio.com available on Amazon or direct. I've some older ones, cabled or wireless, great bass and less than £50 delivered.

 

I also use Beyer DT990 Pro, DT100, Sennheiser 650 etc but these are literally a fraction of the price and very wearable!

I've upgraded to the XM3 recently, and they're a fantastic set of cans. The noise cancelling is amazing on them.

I did have the previous generation version of the Sony WH-CN710N (the WH-CH700N) and the noise cancelling was pretty good on them. Not as good as the XM3/XM4 but for the price I was surprised how good the NC was. I got those for about £80 three years ago. My Dad uses them now, and he likes them a lot!

 

You can't go far wrong with Sony for the price marks they hit.

I'm not sure anything can do that!!

 

Back on topic. I have a pair of AKG Y-55 that i absolutely love.

In fact AKG are pretty awesome in general.

Careful on that one. Once upon a time that was true, but since Samsung bought them, a lot of the engineers have left and formed their own company, Austrian Audio.

The older models that they've had for decades are still awesome, but Samsung seem to be leaning on the "AKG" label to stick it on any old set of headphones these days. Gotta be cautious!

The noise cancelling works well (not as well as much more expensive ones though) but they are affordable (my 'won't make me cry is I lose/break them' rule applies) but the price is a bit high atm, like most other electronics.

If you look on Amazons Warehouse, you can often pick up a returned pair for around £50.

So I've bought myself a set of second hand WH-1000XM3 headphones from eBay. I've been using them for the past week.

 

They're really bloody good. They don't block out everything but you wouldn't expect them to. They are however effective at blocking out the majority of ambient noise such as washing machines, computer fans, Mickey Mouse's clubhouse and suchlike. With these things I've been better able to concentrate on work because I can't hear the general sounds of the house.

 

I also had to go into Central London last week for a hospital appointment and getting on the tube was just odd, at first you could hear the train then adaptive sound control kicked in and all I could hear was the rattling of the coaches, everything else was blocked out pretty well.
