Hi All

Just wanted to ask everyone's opinion on what you think is best for an Primary school environment VMware or Hyper V?

Thanks

VMWare for me but this is just because it is what I know. I know Hyper-V is cost-effective for Schools, especially in the state sector. I have always felt uneasy about installing a full-blown OS then a hypervisor to then run the VM's.

I have always liked VMWare's cut down hypervisor to get the most performance out of the hardware but it does come at a cost in terms of licensing.

Dissenting voice, VMWare. No particular reason other than it is what I am used to and was here when I arrived so no reason to change. There is a large part of me that feels having the tin on a different system than the VMs means less chance of something bad happening but I know there are ways to mitigate the risk with Hyper-V.

You dont need to install the full OS if you dont want to

Having used both, I'd say Hyper V for Education. VMware locks down some of the APIs in the free version of vSphere (of which VM backup is one of them)

VMware may have better management tools (vCenter) but MS is catching up fast with Hyper-V (Windows Admin Center). Plus with Hyper-V you don't have to pay for the vSphere license cost on top of the windows licence.

With Server Standard, you get 2 VMs included with the base licence (2 Windows Server Standard VMs and the host running only hyper-v).

We are not much bigger than a primary , we went hyper v over VMware , we went for a full install of server 2016 and have around 20ish vms and I’m glad I went down the hyper v route , especially now with windows admin centre it is so easy to manage

Hyper-V is very easy to use (or learn if you're unfamiliar) and is baked right into MS Server. VMWare is good, but likely overkill for a Primary - even at a secondary I worked at we migrated all our VMs from VirtualBox and VMWare to Hyper-V, the additional cost for licensing couldn't be justified for what was (imo) a negligible benefit. Snapshotting works a lot better on VMWare, though I'm not sure that would be overly applicable to a Primary deployment, so you may not even use of the core things VMW does better than HV
